pipeline2112's Full Review: Philips DVP642 DVD Player
The day came when my Pioneer DV414 player would no longer power-up (my main suspects are a juice-box and my 2 year-old son...) Anyway, I was in the market for a new DVD player for the home-theater.
I had purchased an Apex player for my brother-in-law last Christmas, so I was familiar with the capabilities that low-cost Taiwanese models could provide. After reading up on some "enthusiast" (i.e. dvd hacking) websites, my focus narrowed on the DVP642.
The price range fit (under $100) and for capabilities, I was mainly interested in DVD and some mp3 playback. Yet this DVP offered much, much more.
This unit played Divx. Unbelievable. Before, I had to use my HTPC for these duties. No more. Now, I can burn all my divx-encoded avis to CD-R or DVD+R media and save myself some headaches.
Lots of outputs: Even better. Component video plus coaxial and toslink digital-audio.
media handling: Now, it doesn't matter what type of disc I use. Cheapo CD-R or Taiyo-Yuden DVD+R and everything inbetween. The DVP642 takes all-comers.
I have one complaint with the unit, though (hey, nothing's perfect): The FF/RR playback. On the remote, you have the four directional buttons with "OK" in the middle. To FF through a movie, you can hit the right-arrow button (hit it a couple of times to scan faster). To get it to stop FF and play normally, you would think to hit the "OK" in the middle. No, no. That doesn't work. You actually have to hit the "Play" button located a few rows down on the remote. Very counter-intuitive. A minor-gripe for an otherwise excellent player.
Measures 17.1 x 1.7 x 9.3 inches (W x H x D); Plays DVD-Video, video CD, audio CD, JPEG image CD, and CDs loaded with MP3, MPEG-4, or DivX 3.11/4.x/5....More at Amazon Marketplace
