The Bottom Line: Plays everything, hackable, cheap. A nearly perfect DVD player. Just hold on to your receipt, as it may not last until its first birthday. YMMV
jcoltrane's Full Review: Philips DVP642 DVD Player
This is a great DVD player. It is relatively cheap, it will play just about every disk and format known to man, it can be hacked/unlocked, and its firmware is upgradeable. Quite simply, it offers me every feature that I most look for in a DVD player.
The one downside - mine died in 10 months. These DVD players are made in China, and Chinese DVD players have more of a hit-or-miss performance record than those made in Japan or other places. Two of my former DVD players, one Apex and one Cyberhome, were both Chinese and both died before their time, in the 10-15 month range. Whether this is planned obsolescence or just poor build quality I cannot say, but my very first DVD player, a Japanese one, is still going strong three years down the road.
That said, since mine is out of the 90-day warranty, Philips is replacing mine at reduced cost ($30) with a brand new more current model, so I really have no complaints. If I had to buy a new one to replace it myself, I probably would have bought the exact same one again. There's just nothing else that matches it or that's any better at doing what I need.
It's worth the risk, just make sure you keep the receipt.
