First of all, many thanks to all those people who wrote reviews and tips and tricks to get it working. I have owned this dvp642 for about 6 months now and could play only 50% of my DivX collection on DVDs for all this time I owned it. I was seriously contemplating getting a mac-mini or media center PC to plug to my TV to play all my collection. The picture on some formats like .mpg and .avi was distorted while others played well. Then I read review from someone who had same problem and all you had to do was press the DISC MENU button and presto! the picture appears fine after that.
I also tried the option to change to Region2 playback by pressing 789-OK-0 with the tray open. Don't know if that was the problem, but now all my DivX .avi and .mpg files start to play fine after previous step.
I also played with the options of output to PAL TV (instead of NTSC) and turn off progressive scan and use S-video.
I can say it now plays about 95% of formats I give it and I am very happy owner.
The dislikes are: inability to play .ogm files, some mpg files and not reading some .srt subtitles. Also during MP3 playback it really sucks as you cannot queue songs or scroll through the list of songs as the cursor gets locked on that song while playing it. The remote could have been better designed with the "play" button somewhere else. Minor hicks here and there, but overall a good product for the price and can replace your media center PC easily.
