Today marks the 6th month that Ive been the proud owner of the Philips DVP642 DVD player. Needless to say, proud owner pretty much tells you how I feel about this unit, but if its all the same Id like to put in my two cents on this unit.
I decided to wait six months to write this review because of all the negative reviews Ive read about this unit. So I figured why not try it on for six months, and see what all the fuss was about. A co-worker is the one who actually mentioned this model to me. Having previously owned a Zenith DVC-2250C, trust me .this was a sorely needed upgrade! Philips boasts You Have It, Well Play It and I have to admit, they really hit the nail on the head with that statement.
PROS
-------
- Plays just about anything and everything
- Aesthetically well constructed (not an eye sore like some DVD players)
- Easy to operate / connect
- Very cheap
CONS
--------
- Remote controller does not have a tray eject button
- JPEG images are quite grainy poor quality (despite me changing the settings)
- Horrible warranty (which is why I opted for the additional 2 year extended warranty at an additional cost)
- I have experienced some playback technical difficulties with one or two of my DivX files but I'm not 100% sure if that's the DVD's fault or if it's because of the encoding. As I understand it, it may be the manner in which the DivX file was written. But I will say this, the one or two DivX files that did have problems played ok on my computer.
