Durability:
Pros: plays almost any format, nice slim style, good picture and sound quality for price
Cons: short lifespan, no menu buttons on unit itself, wider than most, only silver no black
The Bottom Line: It's a decent player that plays multiple formats but be prepared to replace it after 1 to 2 years and don't lose the remote (expensive to replace!)
kitty_4844's Full Review: Philips DVP642 DVD Player
I have only had my DVP642 for less than 2 years (I paid $60 at Wal*Mart) when it suddenly would no longer recognize any of the DivX avi discs and DVDs would start looking choppy or freeze in the middle of it, forcing me to go back and forth until it picked it up again (sometimes it wouldn't, unless I took the DVD out and put it back in, starting from the beginning, very frustrating when this happens 3/4 of the way through or even towards the end). Then it would go through the next phase and would only play audio CDs (not even mp3 discs anymore) and finally it failed to recognize any discs whatsoever. The unit has a nice slim design, however it was much wider than my stereo/surround sound components and wouldn't fit on the shelves on the same side of my entertainment center which forced me to place it on the very top of the entertainment center which to me looked kind of goofy and it wasn't as easily accessible, had it been just 2 inches shorter in width it would have fit in with my other components. It would have also been nice for Philips to offer this unit in black as some people have alot of black audio/video components and prefer the matched look. I have a Norcent backup DVDplayer which is just a DVD/mp3/Kodak picture disc player. I loved the fact that the Philips DVP642 played all kinds of formats, even european PAL DVDs, but the durability is something that is to be desired. Also: it would have been nice to have more of the actual menu features on the unit itself other than just on the remote which is easily lost and costly to replace.
