Pros: Beautiful design, simple and easy to use, voice recorder function
Cons: Noticeably slow processor. Leaves you thinking you could have gotten something better for the money
The Bottom Line: If you are very superficial and need beautiful products, can stand the slow processor, and can get this item for a good price ($250-), then buy it.

| Etherix's Full Review: Philips HDD100 (15 GB) MP3 Player |
Face it. You want the Philips HDD100 because it looks hot.
I find its sleek silver/black surface even more visually appealing than the Apple iPod.
Its voice recorder function is useful, and I have used it to turn my mp3 player into something of a reminder-device too, now.
You should carefully consider if the 15 gigabyte storage space is sufficient, not enough, or too much for your personal needs. I got this after the idea struck my head that I could rip all my CDs into mp3's, and then put them all onto one mp3 player so that I wouldn't have to switch CDs etc. any more to hear songs from my different albums. After ripping my CDs, my number of MP3s had increased substantially and I could not fit everything onto the mp3 player. Make sure this doesn't happen to you too, and that the mp3 player you get has adequate storage space.
Okay. The bad. The HDD100 is very slow. Navigating through its menus is a simple process, but can be painful for you if you're impatient like I am. This is not a biased statement. If you do not believe me, or think that I just got a defective item, try one out yourself. This mp3 player is SLOW, EVEN when music is not even playing. I have one friend and two relatives who also own this mp3 player, and the situation is the same in all four of our cases. Compared to the Apple iPod or an iRiver iHP-120, the HDD100 can be seen as something of a joke. (But at least a goodlooking one)
The sound quality of this mp3 player is not BAD, but it's not good either. I've tried out some other mp3 players, such as the iPod, the iHP, and also a Creative Nomad Zen Ultra, and the HDD100 really just... doesn't measure up. If you think of yourself as an "average user" and you can overlook this aspect... here is my advice. Ignorance here really is not bliss. If you have the money to buy the HDD100, you have enough to buy one of the alternatives I've already mentioned instead. Try them out for yourself. The Philips sound is the poorest.
Okay. On a happier note... this connects to your computer via USB 2.0! Huzzah...
