Cons: Timer only has 6 entries, falures DVD +R disks very high
The Bottom Line: Too many design problems on this model.

| tgilchrist9's Full Review: Philips MDV630R DVD Recorder |
I got a MDV630R on sale at Frys here in town. It can use both DVD r and RW. It does have iLink/Firewire inputs for digital recording. The newer units have had updates to record up to 6 hours. The origional units can be upgraded via software downloaded from the Philips WEB.
I'd stay away from this early unit. Mine just doesn't record well on r DVDs. They quit working on about 1/4 of them after an hour or so. Many other people have had the same problems...no big deal... RW don't cost that much more now..about $1.35 in quantity. However, while it works much better with RW, it still will have problems with some disks and make them unusable (about 5% of them). The problem seems to be that the speed of the software/hardware. It is not unusual to see the unit loose 1/2 a second and "stutter" in record mode (noticable in playback). Philips will repair units, but according to those who I have talked to, the fixes either don't work, or the unit starts failing again.
Another problem is the Philips timer...it has only 6 entries for the timer. If you're going to use it to record programs on a DVD RW for later viewing from tv, cable or sat, then you will soon run out of timers...at least I did. This is the same users interface that Philips uses on all the recorders I have looked at...too bad.
