| Studley's Full Review: Panasonic KX TC1703 900 MHz 1-Line Cordless Phone |
Just bought this cordless phone after buying a 2.4Ghz DSS phone made by GE. I took the GE phone back because outgoing voice quality sounded muffled to those I was talking to. I read that Panasonic phones rate highly, and the other reviews said voice quality was very good, so I bought this model.
Well, I strongly disagree with those who said voice quality is very good on this phone. I'd say voice quality is definitely not good. I'm guessing the other people who reviewed this phone didn't compare the quality against a corded phone or a good-sounding cordless phone, both of which I've done.
I have an older Panasonic 900 Mhz analog cordless phone that has sound quality that's as good as a corded phone. This new digital 900 Mhz Panasonic does not reproduce the frequency range -- particularly the higher tones -- that either my old Panasonic cordless or a corded phone does.
This phone is slightly better in voice quality than the GE phone I returned, but is not near as good in voice quality as either a corded phone or my old Panasonic cordless phone.
Whatever cordless phone you buy, here's how I recommend you test the voice quality: Use it on the same phone line as a corded phone, and when talking to someone on the phone, switch between the two phones and ask which one is clearer and how much clearer it is.
Also, when you leave voice-mail messages for someone, play back the message before approving it, so you can hear how good or bad your outgoing voice quality is.
Besides voice quality, I think this phone has some nice features and would be a fine choice if not for the poor voice quality. However, I think voice quality is very important in a phone, and if it sounds slightly muffled and more monotone than your real voice, people will at times misunderstand you and ask you to repeat yourself.
According to the E-pinions "sound" rating system in the top right corner of this page, I'll rate the sound quality as "average" only because, according to E-pinions' definition, average means "clear enough to understand." Yes, the voice quality is passable, but not very good when compared to other phones.
The bottom line: I'm taking this phone back and will continue my search for a cordless phone with better voice quality. It's odd that this new Panasonic phone, with better technology, has worse sound quality than my two year old Panasonic cordless phone that uses older, outdated technology.
