| fishkin's Full Review: Sony SPP S9001 900 MHz 1-Line Cordless Phone |
I have been looking for a cordless phone for some time. I wanted a model with:
-- 900 Mhz
-- DSS
-- handset locator
-- dual keypad (so you can type in your number either on the phone, or on a larger, more stable base)
-- no answering machine
After some hunting, I chose the Sony SPP-S9001, and have so far been very happy with it. It has all the features listed above, except for the dual keypad - oddly, I couldn't find a single 900 Mhz DSS cordless phone with a dual keypad.
However, the Sony does have a "quasi-dual" keypad. You can put the phone in the cradle either number-side-down (the normal "hang-up" position you're used to), or you can also put it in number-side-up, it works fine either way (a nice touch!). The phone does rock a bit in the cradle when you type numbers this way though, close but no cigar.
The Sony also has a very nice heft and size. In the cellular phone business, the perception is that a smaller phone is better. Unfortunately, this perception has "bled over" into the cordless phone area, meaning that a number of the phones I looked at either had tiny number pads, or were so short that the phone couldn't cover your ear and be close to your mouth at the same time, or both. How annoying! The Sony works very well.
I've had ZERO problems with static or an unclear line - people who call can't detect any difference in quality when I'm using the Sony as opposed to a "regular" phone.
In sum, it may not be the cheapest, but it's a great phone - I'm very happy with it.
