| khahn86351's Full Review: Uniden EXAI 7980 900 MHz - Cordless Phone |
The Uniden 900 MHz with Digital Answering System comes with everything anyone could need in a cordless phone. Not only does it have an digital answering machine, it also has caller id, call waiting, speaker phone and is head set compatible.
This phone eliminates the separate caller id box, the separate answering machine, and the separate cordless phone. All of these options are combined into this compact and stylish phone. One of my favorite features on this phone is the fact that you can charge the phone face down or right side up on the base. Setting the phone right side up allows you to view the caller id without picking up the phone.
We decided to purchase this phone after using another model of Uniden for over 3 years. We've never had any problems with the phone besides one battery change. Also, if you have more than one cordless in a home, it is best to use the same brand to avoid conflict in the reception.
What Comes in the Box:
This phone comes with the base unit, the phone, laminated quick reference guide, safety instructions, an AC adapter to plug the unit into the wall, a rechargeable battery, phone line cord and a wall mount if you choose to mount the phone instead of putting it on a flat surface.
900 MHz
With 900 MHz, you get clearer reception and an extended range. The extended range is useful when using the phone outdoors.
The Digital Answering System
The digital answering machine requires no tapes. This means less aggrivation with purchasing tapes to keep high quality messages. There is a microchip inside the machine that digitally plays and records messages. The microchip is capable of recording up to 15 minutes.
Messages
The answering machine has a time/day stamp to let you know exactly when the call was made. When you have unheard messages, the display will blink and it will show the actual number of messages. You can also turn the answering machine off and set the number of rings: 2, 4 or TS (toll saver). If you choose the toll saver option the answering machine will answer after 2 rings if there are already unheard messages. Also, because there is only 15 minutes of recording time, you can set the limit of incoming messages to 1 or 4 minutes. If you want your greeting to play, but not accept any messages, there is a switch you can set to announce only.
Remote Message Retrieval
If you are going to be away and are afraid of missing calls, this phone has a Remote Message Retrieval function. This allows you to call your home, from ANYWHERE, and retrieve your messages. In the manual, it gives you step by step instructions on how to call home to check your messages. All it takes is a pin number that YOU pick to retrieve and delete your messages. This way you don't miss any important calls, and you can clear your old messages in case you need that extra 15 minutes of time!
Greeting
You have the option to record your own message or use the pre programmed message. You can change your greeting at any time.
Call Waiting with Caller Id
If you have subscribed to call waiting and caller id through your local phone company, you can view the incoming call while you are on the other line. The caller id is located on the phone itself. It displays the date, time, caller's name and phone number. Also, you can store up to 30 names/numbers at a time and have the ability to delete any numbers.
Want to return a phone call?
Simple! If the number is on your caller id, you just move through your caller id using arrow keys until the number you want to call is displayed, then hit talk. It dials the number for you! I keep the numbers I call the most in my caller id for quick access.
Auto Talk
Another nice feature to this phone is Auto Talk. Auto Talk allows you to choose if you want the phone to pick up automatically when you remove it from the base, or allows you to manually answer the phone by pressing the talk button. I prefer have Auto Talk off so that I can pick up the phone to see the caller id before answering the phone.
Other Options
Other options on this phone include 40 channel autoscan, automatic redial, tone or pulse dialing, 2 different ringer tones with high or low volume, 4 earpiece volumes, 10 number memory dialing that you can edit at any time, 2-way record for telephone conversations, voice memo option, 3-way conversation between the base, handset and outside line, remote room monitor, beltclip attachment and and headset plug.
Where NOT to put your phone
According to Uniden, you should avoid direct heat sources (heat vents) and excessive moisture (damp basements). Also, try to keep the base away from electrical equipment such as microwaves, T.V.'s, computers, ect. Some equipment may interfere with the phone. (I've never had ANY problems.)
Where Can I Find this Phone?
I bought my phone at Wal-Mart around Christmas time on sale for $69.99. If you want a better deal, Buy.com has the phone in stock for $47.95 and Overstock.com has it available for $63.56. Both of these are good deals!
Last but not least . . . Customer Service
I have never had to deal with customer service in the 5 years we've owned our Uniden phones. But, if you do need ANYTHING, they can be reached at 1-800-297-1023 Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CST. Uniden requests that you do not return the phone to any store, but instead call them so that they can take care of any problems.
Tips
~ Always charge the phone for at least 12 hours before first time use. I've attempted to use this phone (and others) before the battery was fully charged and it just doesn't last.
~ You don't have to buy the Uniden Battery when you need a new one. Generic versions, which can be found at Wal-Mart, Target, or Best Buy, work just as well and are usually $10-$15 cheaper!
~ Uniden suggests using a dry cloth to clean your phone and base. I have found that using compressed air in a spray can works well for dust. Also, a little alcohol on a cotton swab or q-tip works good for getting stuck on dirt off the unit. Uniden advises against alcohol though, because it may discolor the unit, but I've had no problems and my phone is black.
