What I wanted...
I wanted a simple cordless phone for my dorm room. I don't need an answering system because our campus phone system comes with voicemail already. I was really just looking for a simple, relatively cordless phone. I did some research on epinions and decided on this model.
What I got, and what I love...
**Convenient Speed Dial
I love the speed dial function on this phone. It's so easy to use, unlike my panasonic cordless phone at home that we never figured out how to program. To program this phone for speed dial, simple press the "m" key, dial the number you wish to store, press "m" again, and assign a number to it. The phone will beep to confirm that it's stored. To access the stored number, just press "m" followed by the assigned number anytime when you need it. The number stored as "m-1" is automatically set as the "RocketDial" number, which you can dial by pressing the "RocketDial" button. The numbers stored can be anything, from phone numbers of friends to access code of voicemail. I used mine to store phonecard PIN numbers which are long and a pain to enter every time (and not something you would memorize). It's such a time-saver!
**Great look and reception
It's black, sleek, and easy to clean. The handset is just thick enough for me to carry between my cheek and shoulder with ease. The sound quality is great. I can use my phone anywhere in the house (a townhouse with 2 floors, my room is upstairs) with clear reception.
**Simple keypad layout
The design layout is simple and user-friendly. There are flash and rocket dial buttons on the top, with the "m (speed-dial memory)" button in between. Below this row are the talk, v (volume), and end. Then comes the keypad. At the bottom are redial and channel. Only one light indication, which is in red, is on the phone. It indicates talk or low battery.
**Decent Battery life
It lasts a long time with each charging. I have the habit of leaving it off the base until it runs out of battery, in order to increase the battery life.
**Great bargain price!
I actually first found it on sale at the price of $14.99 at amazon but with shipping and handling, it would add up to around 18 dollars. I found that CircuitCity.com was offering free shipping with the same sale, so I ordered mine from there. Shop around before you buy, especially in online stores where there are always good sales waiting for you. Epinions is a good place to start.
What I DON'T like about this phone...
**No low battery power level warning:
This phone doesn't give much of a warning when the battery is low, it just switches off automatically, cutting you off from your conversation. This is annoying sometimes since some phones warn you by beeping, at least allowing you to finish your current conversation. When the automatic shut-off happens, you need to put it back onto the base to recharge. It will not turn on until the battery has a certain amount of power in there. This bothers me because when you're cut off in the middle of a conversation, the first thing you want to do is to call back and say sorry and goodbye, which you can't do when this baby is out of battery...
**The handset cannot "stand up" on its own:
Because of its handset design, the bottom of the handset is curvy and thus cannot stand "upright" when its not on the charger. This take up some desk space when it's just lying around.
**No "ringer-off" option:
You can turn the ringer to mute "every time" the phone rings. That is, when you hear it rings, you can press "end" and this will mute the ringer for that call. Only that call. The next time another call come in, it will ring again. This can be annoying when you really don't want any call (e.g. when you were up writing a paper until 8am and would like to sleep until 1pm when you have to hand in the paper). The only way to mute it in this situation, I found, is to unplug the phone line.
Is this phone for you?
Questions to consider:
**What functions do you need?
If you just want a cordless with the most simple functions, this is it! You can call, redial, store speed dial numbers on this phone, and you get great reception on a cool looking phone!
**What's your budget?
This phone will fall within your budget because the price is as cheap as it can get! Though at this price, the quality from Uniden is still trust-worthy.
Good luck shopping! I hope my experience with this product was helpful!
