| gyozaman's Full Review: Vtech VT 9111 900 MHz - Cordless Phone |
I think the hardest decision in purchasing this phone wasn't whether the features or qualities were there, it was which colour to choose. Here in Vancouver, Canada, home of the VTech head office, the phones came in Red, Green, Blue and Purple. I bought the Purple one cause I thought it looked the coolest.
I bought 2 phones, one for myself and one for a friend. I live in a standard house and was able to take the 900 Mhz phone outside my house and was able to walk about 1 block down the street before I started to lose reception (don't ask me why, but I just like to do things like that :) ) As for my friend, she lives in an apartment and was able to take the phone into the elevator and go 2 floors up/down with it.
The Vtech VT-9111 comes with many features :
- It is a 900 Mhz phone meaning the frequency that the information travels on is different from the older 10/25 Channel phones which used the frequency of about 40-50 Mhz. In general, the higher the Mhz (frequency), the clarity increases along with longer range and better battery. At the higher Mhz, there is less "traffic" and congestion with users because it can support alot more signals/traffic because of its larger bandwidth. That is why the older phones 10/25 channels had lots of interference as well as you could probably hear your neighbors sometimes. There are newer phones such as the Panasonic Gigahertz phones (1.9 GHz) that are available and are supposed to be able to have ranges of 4 blocks.
- Colours available are blue, green, red, purple. There are not too many phones on the market that allow for choices to match your home environment as well as differentiation in case you have more than one in the house.
- Volume switch on the side allows for 3 different settings (not the smoothest action because it is a switch rather than push button controls)
- 4 different ring tones (actually ring pitches and speeds vary only) as well as several different ring volumes. The phone actually rings very loud compared to other models on the market. Great for people that forget where the handset is or for people that have hearing difficulties.
- Great battery life lasts on standby for over a week. I haven't talked continuously on it so I don't know how long it last on a continuous talk time.
- Other general good things are fixed, stubby antenna so it doesn't get in your way or you don't have to pull it up or down or poke yourself accidentally (do you know what I mean ?...hehe) when you put it in your pocket.
- Any Key Answer so you don't have to fumble for the talk/on button. Phone lights up when it rings so you can find it at night. Standard 10 memory, manual channel switching (when there is static, the phone will switch channel when you press the "channel" button to gain a better signal)
- Clarity of the phone is excellent. It sounds almost exactly like a land line phone. There is a very slight "hollow/echo" noise sometimes but overall the clarity is great. Unlike alot of other cordless phones, the earpiece volume is good. I find the Sanyo cordless phones to be very low in earpiece volume and hard to hear the other person on the line.
There are only a few downsides to this phone and that is if you have to replace the battery. A replacement battery here in Vancouver costs 1/2 of the phone ! I got the phone for $69 CDN and the replacement batter costs about $30. The other downside is that there are some models with the headset jack available. You can plug in a mini headset similar to the ones used for cellular phones and use the phone "hands-free". These models are only $10 more and I don't know why they just didn't put it on the VT-9111.
Overall, for the price of a 900 MHz phone, this is a great choice and it looks cool. I just hope the colour fashion of it doesn't die in a year and everyone will be laughing at the colour of my phone.
