| lunapark's Full Review: Pioneer Elite DVR-57H (120 GB) DVD Recorder |
I found the DVR-57H extremely easy to setup. Setup time was probably 45 minutes for the initial setup. It is important to understand in my opinion, that this maybe a home audio/video piece, but for all intents and purposes, it is a PC. It has a bios, it needs to boot up when it is cut on, it has a fan, It has a PC based DVD drive and a PC based hard drive. Knowing this up front will remove a lot of questions as to why it does what it does. Upon connecting the USB wireless interface, I purchased the linksys WUSB11 ver 2.8, do not plug this in until you are completely finished with the first setup. Then you can plug it in, and go to connect to TIVO now. This will download the latesest drivers for that card, then you can proceed to configure your IP connection. I found all of the basic TIVO functions as they should be, The only complaint that I can find, is that when recording from Direct TV, in the SP mode, next to best mode, some pixilation takes place, and transfers over to the DVD. Recording at the best mode removes this. Being that Have some experience with this, I think replacing the drive with an Audio/Video class drive may remove this problem, and I will be trying it. I feel pretty certain Pioneer did not go that route it would have been cost prohibitive. I also did not find the FAN loud as others have suggested. When I spoke to TIVO about the pixilation in SP mode (2 hours on a DVD), they said that was normal, because it was a digital signal that I needed to step up to the best recording mode. For those who have complained about giving up hard drive space with quality, Hello....what did you expect. The better the quality the bigger the file. If you are running out of room upgrade to a bigger hard drive. I paid $1064 for mine.
