Pros: Installation guide is excellent, recorded picture is excellent, noise is not noticable.
Cons: Probably a little too costly but...
The Bottom Line: Serious consider this DVR if you are considering TiVo.

| retired-navy's Full Review: Pioneer Elite DVR-57H (120 GB) DVD Recorder |
After months and months of researching which DVR and/or TiVo to buy I finally settled on the Pioneer DVR 57H over all else, even Pioneer's other DVR. I do not regret paying the extra cost.
Real world experience has shown that a 40 GB hard drive will only store about 13 hours of TV programs at a setting worth watching. The 120 GB that came with the DVR 57H then can store up to 52 hours; more than enough. Today I am recording Colonial House on PBS which lasts 8 hours. Given the regular TiVo systems this would fill up over 75% of the storage; with the 120 GB - no problem. Besides, I can record to a DVD if I really want to say the show.
There have been some reviewers that say the recorder is noisy, well I can hear a very slight whine when the room is very still and quite; under normal household noise I do not hear any sound at all. This should not be a deciding factor.
It took me from open box thru TiVo set up about 3 hours. That included changing my previous set-up, connecting the new wiring to a VCR, Denon receiver, TV and going thru the TiVo set up procedures (mostly using the self explantory TiVo screens. I have TiVo basic (no charge) and will use this service for a while to see if I need to upgrade to the Plus. I am so use to programming the VCR that the TiVo is very similar. We'll see.
I went to Tweeters and paid $1100 vice going on the Web mainly because I had a bad experience a few years ago and am a little leary without a warranty. The price at Tweeters has come down over $300 which may mean that the next, newest model will be out shortly (just my guess).
The Black case is stunning (all my other components are black) and the set up booklet very easy to follow.
I may have paid too much but if I keep it for 10 years (the same as my Sony VCR) then it's worth it.
