Pros: May just be the best -R/-RW unit available at any price.
Cons: Difficulty in recording older source tapes. Cable-box record quality was a bit less-than-desired. Minor cons!
The Bottom Line: Why this isn't available at most of the major retailers (Best Buy, Circuit City) is a mystery! Worth searching for, though!

| arlingtoncourt's Full Review: Pioneer DVR-310S DVD Recorder |
Since nobody else has reviewed this unit (and after reading so many horror stories about other DVRs out there) I thought I'd do the honor. This is simply a great, great unit. The picture quality (with 32 settings available between the 2 and the 6-hour modes) is excellent in the 2-hour mode, while even the 4-hour mode makes very, very good recordings as well. On top of that, there is no recording-in-timeblocks like a lot of other recorders: you hit record, and its going. Likewise, when you stop (or pause) it stops right there. Unfortunately, no manual chapter inserts are available in the regular Video Mode, but that seems to be the standard out there. The hook-ups to cable, another VCR, or DVD player are easy and easy to source when recording - probably as easy as any VCR. The timer function, in fact, is probably easier to set than most VCRs! Add to all this the ability to record with RW discs, and you have a unit that is on a level with any of the more expensive RW recorders. Any perceived drawbacks? The video signal when recording from some of my older, beaten-up VHS tapes is shaky and sometimes fades to black when the 310 can't read the source, but on a good tape, the recordings were excellent. Also have seen what looks like satellite-dish pixelation when I've recorded through my cable box, but that could perhaps be remedied with a higher record speed - that'll be my next test. Overall, I can't sing the praises of this unit enough. For the price, you will not find better. In fact, from what I'm reading out there, you might not find better, period. (And no, I don't work for Pioneer!)
