| disartain's Full Review: Aiwa CSD-TD901 Cassette/CD Boombox |
It is hurricane season again. Every year I have told myself I would buy a new portable radio that runs on batteries and electricity. Every year I have made do with the one I used during Hugo in 1989, one I will never forget. Hopefully I will be able to leave the area if another threatens the SC coast. I never want to be here for another hurricane, I still have nightmares about Hugo and the night we survived.
We have the propane grills, and outside cookers, as well as other hurricane supplies in case we need them. I didnt want to wait until the last minute like I did before and all I could find to buy was a Walkman with ear phones.
My husband and I searched and finally came home with the AIWA CSD-TD901 Portable Boom Box

Cons
The only thing I do not like is the CD player cover keeps popping open at unexpected times. It pops when moving it from one place to another, when pulling up the handle. I intend to put a piece of tape to hold it down until I get ready to use it.
Takes 8 C cell batteries.
Bulky to carry around. It weighs about 7 lbs a little heavy when you take it to the beach.
My Final thoughts
The AIWA CSD-TD901 Portable Boom Box sounds almost as good as my Bose radio. I like the clear sound and the way it is set up. The CD player is on top, the Cassette player is on the front. Both speakers are visible on the front sides. It is easy to program and the antenna brings in a few more distant stations and really helps the reception in the house. I live in a little small town far from the radio station.
It will work for the purpose I bought it for, to listen to the outside world when trapped by a hurricane or other natural disaster. The last time when Hugo tore through the Low Country of South Carolina, electricity and phones were out for weeks along with many water lines. The Radio was the only way we could find out where to call for help, get in touch with people, and know what help was coming our way. Stations in nearby states and cities that were not affected as bad as we were, quit their normal programs to receive phone call and send help where needed.
I hope all I need this boom box for is to take to the beach and listen to the music. I dont know how long the batteries will last, we used it last week when out electricity went out for about three hours and the weather was bad. I used it again to day to listen to the NASCAR race. I would imagine that the batteries last about as long as others do.
Precautions: never keep the radio near water of bathrooms.
Warranty is Labor/90 days / Parts/1 year.
