| mattyboyslc's Full Review: Archos Mini JukeBox Recorder (15 GB) MP3 Player |
Just a short review:
The Archos 15 recorder is top notch for a low price. Granted, there are better players out there, in regards to style and smaller size, but if you get this bad boy with rebates, it doesn't make sense to shell out 100-300 extra dollars for an "upgrade". The technology will get cheaper, better and smaller in size in a couple of years anyway, and you'll be ready to buy a new one then anyway right?
As far as reliability is concerned, I have had the Archos now for 6 months, and have had no problems with this player in particular. However, the first unit I bought was buggy, and I had to return it to circuit city. It just wouldn't boot up. Archos told me there are a few lemons in each batch, so keep your receipt. With that in mind though, I wouldn't be scared off from trying the Archos. On my unit, I have had no problems, and it has run very well. Archos comes with decent customer support, the guys are pretty helpful. Also, there is a one year warranty that gives you a little peace of mind. Many other units come in with a 3 month warranty only.
As far as operation, this thing will boot up and run with little delay. The buttons are extremely easy to use and figure out. The manual is terrible, but it only takes basic computer knowledge and a little bit of time to get the system mastered.
I especially like the way that the Archos plugs right in to your PC, and is detected as an external hard drive. There is nothing complicated to it. you drag your mp3s to the drive, organize them into folders, and you're good to go. This hard drive style m3 player is what seperates the boys from the men. I would only buy a hard drive based player, because they are so simple to use. It's a really effective and simple unit.
The Archos will fit in your pocket, but it's a little bulky. In comparison to anything but the Creative Labs "Zen" or apple "Ipod", it is the next smallest. At this point in Jukebox technology, it is decently sleek and portable.
If you are the type that wants top of the line, regardless of cost, get an ipod. but if you are cool with a very good product with few drawbacks for less than half of the price of the ipod, archos is your gig.
