Pros: Basic; Great sound; 12 hour battery; rugged; no DRM; expandable memory; great display; longevity
Cons: No bling; cheap looking; proprietary firmware/software/cables required; New protective case please; Tuner
The Bottom Line: If human range of hearing is only 20-20khz, then with a good headset this surpasses it. Proffesionally this hits lows of 5hz and highs above 22khz.

| rahiim3's Full Review: Rio S50 Street (128 MB) MP3 Player |
I purchased this player appx 5 years ago. I can't remember the price, but remember it being fairly cheap. Didn't expect much from it with 128mb of memory. I've tried a myriad of other players some good others far worse than this player. The cheesy blingy players usually were of poor sound/usability and some other cheap players were just as good but lacked some of the s50's features. S50 fairly intuitive to use once you have music onboard. Memory cards have come a long way since 2003; I currently have 2 1GB cards formatted for the player. The 5 band equalizer and bass boost is a strong point for this player as it is a rare encounter on many other players. My blue backlight has long since stopped working but the display is is very easy to read without the magnifying glasses required for the overly blingy yet small displays of newer cheap players. I keep mine in the original black foam shock absorbing case that shipped with the unit; it has survived many waist/table height falls without breaking (except for the backlight). I only dislike that I have to format SD cards for it. Wished I could just directly download mp3s directly to sd cards instead of using additional software and connecting the player via the proprietary cable to my computer. But I imagine long after the ipod craze and the death of the drm players this player will continue to be on the market as a very well sounding basic mp3 player. Mine will be with me for a very long time if not replaced with the same. Hope firmware will become available to allow downloads directly to sd cards. Historically this player should be remembered as the 'Walkman' of Mp3 players.
