| Girlina's Full Review: Samsung Yepp YP-E64 (64 MB) MP3 Player |
Just to clarify, Gadgetgirlie was once known as Gadgetgrrl (how was I supposed to know some litigious chick has a Gadgetgrrl site?). Either way, expect to hear more of the same stylin' views on your favorite gadgets.
After dropping my Rio SE one too many times, I was definitely in the market for a new MP3 player that met the following requirements: Must have at least 64 meg. Must connect through serial (alas, I am USB-less). Must actually be available for sale somewhere within the United States. And, of course, must be cool!
A kind friend obliged with my yummy Christmas present: The Samsung Yepp, pretty much the only device that matches these qualifications. (The only other 64MB units are either harder to find than hen's teeth or only use USB.) Now the Yepp and I are literally joined at the hip, and despite a few weird quirks - most of which are software related - I couldn't be happier about it.
So how does the Yepp acquit itself on the major points? Here's a checklist:
Size: A bit thinner and a bit shorter than the Rio SE, but mostly the same in terms of portability and weight.
Sound: The Yepp's real advantage. Sound is appreciably clearer than on my poor Rio, with a 3-D option on all equalizer pre-sets that's fairly effective. (As with most of these units, you must choose between presets for rock, jazz, classical, etc.).
Software: A poorly designed program that's a major bummer: You must transfer songs over one at a time, and since it's connected via serial (which is slower than USB) the process can be a major chore - expect it to take 15 minutes or more to fill up on tunes. The first generation software for the Rio was the same, so I can only hope an upgrade is in the future. A plus for some people might be the voice record and address book functions, which I've never even bothered to use.
Storage: Since I have the 64 meg unit, and already owned a 32 meg SmartMedia card that I used with my Rio, I now have an amazing 96 meg - over an hour and a half of music! So I can't complain.
Style: Very sleek in metal (the front) and silver-toned plastic (the back). The balance of the off-center circular thumbpad and the rectangular LCD is very Zen. Plus it matches my Samsung phone perfectly! Although controls are a bit small they are still pretty easy to work, and a nice large LCD makes it easy to figure out what track you're listening too.
My only other quibbles include the lack of a random or shuffle play function, and skipping through songs is strangely slow. But overall, I say "Yep" to the Yepp!
