| hannahmont's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-F200 Personal CD Player |
The Sony CD Walkman with radio D-F200 is a wonderful piece of equipment. I have had it for 7 months and have used it frequently, in many circumstances and I have not been unsatisfied.
It offers excellent shock protection. I have taken it running and it's never skipped. I have listened to it in a car that was driving on pot-hole filled roads and it also never skipped. I even dropped it once and it did not skip. I have never trusted ESP to work, but it actually does on this model.
This model has an AM/FM radio which is unusual (I think) on portable cd players. The headphone wires act as the FM antenna and the reception is excellent in most places I've tried it. 5 FM bands are available for you to set up to 5 presets on each band. It would be better if they offered less bands and more presets, but with a total of 25 presets available, one shouldn't run out of space. The unit itself is the AM antenna and the reception can be improved by turning the unit itself, but I've never really gotten good AM reception (but then again, who does??). The AM band offers 5 preset spaces as well. It's a nice addition having the radio on this player. I highly suggest it for those who like to go beyond their cd collection.
The cd player controls are easy to use: push the up button to advance to the next song, hold it down to fast forward the current song. The down button does the opposite actions. The play button acts as a pause button as well. The bass can be increased to half or full bass sound. There are also the following play options: repeat all, play one song, repeat one song, repeat all shuffled.
If you shut off the player, it will remember where you were last listening. There is also a hold switch that allows you to lock the player both when it's off to avoid accidental playing and wasting of the battery and also when it's on and playing to avoid stopping or skipping songs. This is very helpful in avoiding wasting your batteries. Speaking of batteries, the unit requires only 2 AA batteries. The batteries last a long time as well. I used it on two cross country flights, many runs and a few car rides before they croaked. I was impressed with the battery life as I had heard that cd players just eat up batteries.
The headphones are cumbersome and uncomfortable after a while. It would have been nicer if the player had come with smaller headphones, but they do deliver high quality sound which may be compromised with smaller headphones.
The cover hinge seems a bit flimsy and pops up with a bit of a jolt, but I don't think it will break if treated properly.
An annoying beep sounds with every button pushed unless it is turned off by removing the batteries and doing some complicated maneuver. I don't have the manual on me, so i can't describe what's required, but it would be nice if it just didn't beep at all.
Overall, I highly recommend this player. I have enjoyed using it and have purchased it for a friend.
