| dr__bob's Full Review: RCA Lyra RD1080 (128 MB) MP3 Player |
Purchased this in February 2004 from a Best Buy because it was on sale and I had been looking for an MP3 player that had 128mb of storage as I was upgrading from a 16mb JaMP3 player. The controls are laid out well and it makes it easy to operate without looking at the unit. Many times I stick it in my coat pocket and run it from there. The display gives you easy to read info such as MP3 song title and artist and bit rate, playing time, Volume level, track number and battery level. The battery level is only a full or low indicator. If it shows low you dont have much time left so it is only marginally helpful. It also displays the preset equalizer setting (DSP) such as Bass, Jazz, Rock or Pop as well as setting bass and treble to your own liking. The backlight is blue and works well.
Connecting to an XP PC is simple and it shows up as another drive so you can Delete and copy MP3's to it easily. It takes about 15 minutes to transfer 115mb of music to it.
The FM radio is really only for stations within 10 to 20 miles away. Otherwise reception will be spotty.
It came with clip on over the ear foam covered ear phones. They are functional but the sound quality is lacking in them which hides a flaw in the player. When I changed to ear buds I quickly noticed the one big flaw in this unit - noise and background hiss. You may not notice it during many songs but if there is a quiet passage and between songs is it very noticeable with quality ear buds. This flaw keeps this player from being a serious music tool but for many uses it is much better than trying to haul a CD player around with you. For instance, I use mine while lawn mowing and for short walks from car to work. Also if your music is more on the intense side, there is little chance you will detect the noise at all.
It has no belt clip so if you have no pocket, you are forced to use the slide thru the belt holder (or the armband strap) or hook it to yourself either with the neck strap or devise your own chain/clip.
This player seems tough enough to last me for a year or more and for a hundred dollar item that I use almost everyday I believe I will get my moneys worth.
