Pros: Good Speakers, Looks Pretty
Cons: Overheats, Can't play DVD Movies, No builtin wireless, Floppy Monitor Hinges
The Bottom Line: Don't buy this laptop, unless for $100 or less. It overheats (to the point of shutting off) quite easily.

| kachline's Full Review: Compaq Presario 700US PC Notebook |
We bought the Presario 700 new for my wife. Unless you can pick up one of these for $100 or so, I would not recommend this particular model.
As google searches will show, this laptop has some serious issues with overheating, and with breaking hinges on the monitor. As we do not transport the laptop much, our hinges have not broken yet (though our hinges are floppy now, so it's just a matter of time).
Overheating has been a significant issue for us. After a few years of not reloading WinXP Home, the computer would literally bootup (from cold) overheat, and shut itself down before we could ever actually get to the start menu.
We eventually loaded Ubuntu Linux on the laptop, which works fine as a browser machine, so long that you don't pull up pages requiring heavy flash or java; in which case, overheating is again, an issue.
In any case, don't even think of using this laptop to play DVD movies; it is sure to overheat. Consider the DVD-Rom useful only for installing DVD based software.
The speakers are pretty good, and, despite other posting, we've found the keyboard to be about the right size. This laptop could probably be best considered for an in-home, "email / web surfing / mp3 playing" kiosk of sorts, again, so long that you avoid any CPU intensive tasks.
