This is the review on the HP OfficeJet 6110xi. The major differences the xi has over its counterpart is a bigger memory that holds 100 pages as opposed 80 and the zoom on the xi is from 40 to 200 percent as opposed to 25 to 400 percent on the 6110. The 6110xi also has 100 coded speed dials for the fax feature while the 6110 has only 75 .
True Multifunctional Device
The 6110xi comes standard with copying, printing, scanning and faxing. All features can be done in color or in black and white (b/w).
The copy speed is 19 cpm in b/w and 14 cpm in color in fast 300 x 300 dpi. The unit can go up to 1200 x 1200 dpi but will slow down the copy speed. It has a standard feeder that can hold up to 35 originals. You also have the ability to reduce the image down or up from 40% to 200%. You also have 2 preset reductions, the first at 91% which is the "Reduce-to-fit" setting and 72% which reduces images from legal to letter. Special copy jobs you can do are Copy Several to One Page (Original image repeated several times and reduced), Print 2 Orig on One Page (This is good for copying a drivers license where you have to copy both sides. Using this feature holds the first image in memory and then starts printing the image once the second side has been scanned.) Shift the image. Make a poster (This is where the Orig image is separated into parts. Each part is the letter size and you have to piece your poster together.) Finally, T-shirt Transfer (This is where the Orig Image is printed backwards, like what you would see if you stood in front of a mirror.
The unit faxes both in color and b/w. It actually has 2 separate buttons that act as the start button that asks the user "black fax" or "color fax". Faxing in b/w is faster than faxing in color b/c the unit has to scan the image slower to capture and crunch all that data if you wish to send the image in color. It approximately took about 5 minutes for one color page. You can store up to 100 speed dials. Can redial a fax number up to 5X. Print out activity reports. Has ECC (Error Correction Mode) so it can detect not only if a fax went through fine but will resend if detected an error occurred for instance in the last part of the image did not go through. It faxes out at a standard 33.6 Kbps. And it has Distinctive Ring which allows you to tell it that a single, double, triple or all rings is a fax. This is for the user who uses one phone line but through their phone company uses 2 distinct phone rings. I use a single ring for voice calls and double rings for fax calls. This is of course up to the user.
You can scan at a mere 300 x 300 only and can save the file as document, save to MS Word, Frontpage or Email. If you scan to MS Word you can use take advantage of the OCR software the HP Director comes with. Unfortunately it did a horrible job recognizing some of the text on my test sample. Now to HP's defense it was a faxed original so it wasn't the best quality. However, real world paperwork is sometimes fax quality. For example the word "Founded" was clear on my original and came out as "Eunded" on the scan. The scan also required a little cleaning up to delete erroneous symbols that software interpreted. If you save to file it can be saved as a .pdf, .txt, .htm or .rtf. This is of course saved as an image and is non-editable. If you scan to email, it saves the image as a .pdf (Adobe) and uses MS Word email editor to enable the user to write in the body of their email message. Finally, I don't have FrontPage and do not know what happens if you scan to that...sorry.
This is reason why I bought the printer in the first place. You can print borderless photos in either 4x6 or 8.5x11. You have to use premium quality photo paper to absolute see the potential for this unit. It looks like the photos came from a lab. It is that good. The unit also acts like a normal everyday inkjet printer that has different settings of print quality (Best, Normal, Everyday and Fast Draft). Can print both in color and b/w. Has a setting to adjust the Saturation, Brightness and Color Tone and has a preview pane that has a standard photo so you can see what you are doing a color image. And you can print 2-sided but you have to re-feed the paper manually as opposed to the machine doing it for you. If this option is chosen it prevents the printer pulling a second sheet to print out a second page b/c it know you want to print the second page on the other side of the first sheet.
The input tray holds 100 sheets of 20lb bond. Heavier stock lessens the amount it can hold b/c they are thicker. The unit measures (HxWxD) 11.8 x 19.5 x 15.5 and is 24 lbs. It comes std with 8 MB of RAM which can be upgraded to 16 MB. This unit is Energy Star Compliant. Toner yield of course varies. HP is claiming 125 4x6 photos at 15% coverage. Again, the drawback is having to replace the color cartridge eventhough it is not completely empty. In other words you can have a half a tank left of cyan but all your magenta is gone and it has to be replaced. I was hoping HP would follow Canon's lead and build a device that can have separate replaceable color tanks.
