I bought my epson 740 3 years ago at a local bestbuy store, after comparing the print quality with HP, Canon and Lexmarks. Now after 3 years of extensive use - hundrends of full color, high resolution prints, it still works strong. though printing text on plain paper is not as crisp as the lexmarks, but you will be hard to find better photo-quality printer at this price range. not until half-year ago when I changed the parallel cable to USB cable, the printer processing used to be slow especially when you are printing a big image file. but now the speed increased dramatically with the USB cable connection (you can not use USB in win95 or win NT4 though). So definitely that's a must-do upgrade.
Everybody will complain about the high-price of the ink cartridge, but now with so many alternative cartridge to original Epson ones, the cost is no long a problem ( you can find plenty on Ebay). Even for me, a graphic-intensive user, the color came out of these alternative cartridges really match up the quality of original epson ones, and at not even half the price.
print quality between setting at 1440 DPI and 720 DPI are dramatic, so if you can wait some extra minutes, i would definitely recommend the highest resolution.
Month after month, year after year, this EPSON 740 works Hard to stand for its unbeatable reputation!
