Construction.
This printer has rather modest dimensions. The body is executed from light plastics, only bottom is painted in darker color. The giving tray equipped with the moved terminator of a breadth of sheets is located in a back part of body under angle approximately 45 degrees. The receiving tray in work position is throwed off forwards and is decomposed. The access to the printing mechanism for setting and replacement of cartridges is carried out with the help of throwed off up cover. Through the transparent window of a cover it is possible to observe of transition of the carriage.
The controls (three buttons and two indicators) are located on a forward board. One more button (initialization of a procedure of a replacement of cartridges) is hidden under a cover. On a backboard the interface plugs USB and IEEE-1284 and also standard plug IEC-320 are located.
Software.
During testing the driver of versions 6.00 installed from an enclosed CD was used.
The window of the driver contains four folders three from which are intended for set-up of printing, and fourth is for start of various service modes.
Set-up of the driver allows selecting a type, orientation and format of a paper and also mode of its submission (selffeeding of sheets or roll). An apart from of standard formats represented in the list, the user if necessary can create any, breadth from 89 up to 241,3 mm and length from 89 up to 1117,6 mm. The parameters of user's formats can be saved under any titles.
The possibility of choice of standard or maximum area of printing is stipulated. In the latter case, according to an information of the manufacturer, some deterioration of quality of an image on edges of a sheet can take place. Besides there are options of a centering of an image on a sheet and printing without side fields (last is accessible only for printing on a rolled paper). It is possible to set a necessary amount of copies, and also option of a turn of a printed image on 180 degrees, printing of pages in the return order and other.
On a main board of the window of tunings it is possible to select used ink (color or black), and also one from three modes of set-up of printing quality (automatic, PhotoEnhance or user's). In automatic mode it is possible to select a high velocity or excellence of printing. In PhotoEnhance mode it is possible to select one from type styles (standard, portrait, landscape, diffusion focal point and sepia), and also option of a correction of a digital photo.
From service folder it is possible to load the program - screen monitor, to initiate procedures of check and calibration of the print head, and also to receive an information about the printer and it options.
Together with the driver are installed the firm manager of printing and program - screen monitor, in which window are mapped progress-indicator of the active job, time which has stayed up to its completion, name of the file, common and printed amount of pages, type and format of a selected paper, and also levels of ink in printing cartridges.
On CD also there is a program Epson PhotoQuicker, intended for creation of digital photoalbums and printing of images. PhotoQuicker allows to make simple image processing, and also to realize printing photos of a selected size with automatic accommodation on a sheet of a used format.
Quality of printing.
The images printed on a usual paper, was received insufficiently contrast, sometimes objects had unnatural colors.
The images printed on a paper with the improved cover, has optimum brightness and contrast, however color balance is shifted in yellow colors slightly, because of what the sky and greens look a little unnaturally. By at all colors are bright and saturated, the details in shadows are well worked. All samples of the color and black text are well read, outline of numerals precise.
The images printed on photographic paper are optimum on brightness and contrast, however their color balance noticeably is shifted in the yellow colors.
It is necessary to mark high detail and not noticeable on an eye a raster structure on all above described prints.
Summing up obtained outcomes, it is possible to tell, that, an optimum solution for the given printer will be use of a paper Epson Matte Paper - Heavy Weight. Almost all prints on photographic paper, though differ by more saturated nuances, have one common fault - surplus of yellow color.
Common notes.
The procedure of connection of the printer and installation of the software has passed smoothly.
The printer works with low noise level, however I was irritated whistling sound during printing a little.
The printing is carried out in six paints. There are two cartridges in the print head: with black and color ink. The construction of the printing mechanism allows realizing printing without fields.
Epson Stylus Photo 890 has demonstrated good productivity and high exactitude of colors (it is important, that this parameter was stabile for all types of the used paper). It is necessary to mark convenient software having a large set of functions.
