DO NOT buy an Epson Photo 960

Pros: Good photo prints, when it works
Cons: Smears black ink, misfeeds paper, printed envelopes not usable
The Bottom Line: This model Epson printer has severe problems not usually associated with Epson products. It spews out black ink, wasting ink and smearing black streaks on printed output.

I had second thoughts about buying the Epson Photo 960 after reading the review on this site by quincy011. However, I had also read many good things about the 960 and it's features seemed the best match for my needs. My experience with the printer has been a nightmare. Everything quincy011 experienced came true for me too.
The printer spews black ink that saturates the foam pad that sits just below the paper rollers. Then the black ink sporadically shows up as blotches and bars on the printed page. When I reported the problem, Epson sent me a reconditioned printer as a replacement that when it arrived looked like it had had the same problem because of the ink that was still inside the printer. Then they sent me a supposedly new printer that already had red ink deposited inside. After sending back these two replacements, they sent me a 3rd and 4th replacement printer, one new and one reconditioned. I hooked up the new one, and within the first day it was smearing black ink in the same way the first printer did. It also misfed 4x6 photo paper. It also can't print envelopes as the printing is uneven leaving some of the address not readable.
At this point Epson has agreed to refund my purchase price. They say they're mailing me paperwork to complete and will refund my money within 10 days of receiving the last defective printer.
