| rachone's Full Review: Hewlett Packard PhotoSmart 1115 InkJet Printer |
I just bought my HP photosmart 1115 printer in December 2001 and have enjoyed it's great printing quality and capabilities. It is well-designed and looks great on the desk. It is also quiet for a $200 printer.
The printer comes with everything you need to start printing out of the box, including well-designed instructions. It is easy to set up and all the software and cartridges are provided for you. I am working on a Titanium Apple Powerbook and it works wonderfully. Using the drivers that it came with, it is responsive and ready once I plug in my USB cable.
Quality is amazing, even on normal bond paper. I bought photo paper; both glossy and matte and HP brochure paper; also both glossy and matte. The photos are amazing. It also prints on little 4" x 6" photos for full-bleed, "fresh from the lab" photos. The brochure paper makes the quallity even better. I bought the glossy paper to create little brochures. The color quality is ok, but the black is not black, so the overall image is a bit light. With the matte brochure paper, the image looks like it came out of a color laser printer and I am very pleased with the quality. I always use the matte brochure paper for client comps.
The HP Photosmart 1115 handles paper very well. I rarely get jams. It has a 100 sheet paper tray and a little tray for 4" x 6" photo paper (holds 20 sheets).
The printer has ports on the side to insert your flash card and smart media cards in the side and print right from them. This is great! The menuing system to choose the photo (especially if you don't identify your photos by number) is a bit tricky. I would recommend using the HP Photosmart 1300 series if you plan to print photos from your flash card often. The 1300 series has a 2.5-in color display so you can preview your photos before you print them. I usually identify my photos visually and not by number so I don't use that capability very much.
The printer connects to you computer via USB or parallel cables. You'll have to purchase these cables separately unless you have them. Super easy and it comes with productivity software but I don't use it. I print mainly from Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and an occasional email or two.
I have had an Epson printer in the past and it is much quieter than the Epson. It is also made with stronger materials and looks great! HP makes a great product. You will really enjoy this printer. A great value.
