| p1rana's Full Review: Hewlett Packard PhotoSmart 1115 InkJet Printer |
This is my first printer review on epinions so feel free to give me any suggestions...
Ok, i got this about a month ago and it has been great. It all started when my old hp, a printer/scanner combo ran out of ink. It had been a good printer for its day but it had its share of paper jambs and we were ready to get a new one. So, rather then getting a new print cartridge, we made a quick trip to Office Depot and they suggested the HP Photosmart 1115 for our needs. Now, after a month and 2 big projects (I am a high school student) it has done everything I would ever need a printer to do. I mostly use my printers for text reports and school projects in which I incorporate a lot of photos and color. I also do a lot of photography with a 35mm Nikon N70, though the scanner on the old printer is no longer in use. I have instead used a Canon G1 digital camera from my dad's work and have tested the printer with pictures from that, which are surprisingly high quality for a little point and shoot camera. Let's move on to the specifics of this printer:
Paper Handling:
I don't know if my old printer was that bad or if this is great. So far I have had no paper jambs whatsoever and i have probably printed off 50 pages since I bought it (which may not be a lot to some people). It feeds well and quietly and it is always lined up perfectly when the final product comes through.
Color and Picture Quality:
Up until this review I have been using standard printer paper. The photos have looked great on this though, the paper dulls the colors just a bit, but nothign to complain about. Writing this review I decided to take a sheet of the photo paper included with the printer and test it out with a picture of my house. As said by another reviewer, it is probably as good as 1 hour photo. This may be a very very slight exagerration but it may not be because all of the normal photos I have are from an entry level professional camera, not a digital camera, which probably isn't as good as far as the resolution goes. As far as speed, full page pictures only take 30 seconds or so. My old printer took minutes.
Text:
For one of my recent projects I compared how my printer was to the other projects of people in my class. It was far superior in all aspects. One thing that surprised me was that the text was much darker and defined then a majority of the class. It also spits text pages out quietly and pretty fast for the price, 12ppm, 10 in color.
Printing pictures directly from the photo card:
The printer has 2 memory card slots, I am not sure which type but I know that they will not take Sony memory cards. The interface is pretty simple but can be a pain if you don't know the order of the photos on the card, but this is not a major problem as you can check them on your computer. Using the printer, you can easily change the photo size and not take the same effort required to do that on you cpu.
Other info:
This printer uses either parallel ports or USB cables to connect to your computer. I am using a parallel port right now but I will probably upgrade to USB soon, my computer only has 2 ports and we were in a rush the night we bought the computer so we skipped getting one of those 1:4 USB splitters (I am not really sure what they are called). Finally, the printer comes with some productivity software but I haven't gotten to using it, and will probably stick with Adobe anyway. FYI, the software is called ArcSoft Photoimpression.
All in all i recommend this printer to anyone who does a good combination of text and color/photo printing, especially if they use a digital camera often.
