surgeondaddy's Full Review: Sony Digital Photo SV55 Thermal Printer
While my wife was pregnant with our son we of course had to start the ritual of buying all sorts of equipment such as formula, wipes, bottles, and obviously a digital camera! So as we proceeded to take our four-hundredth picture the day after he was born I realized that it would be great to actually see these shots on paper. Since we had bought a Sony camera I settled on buying the matching printer and we have never looked back. (Well it is difficult since we are now surrounded with mounds of photos.)
The Sony was easy to set up right out of the box. We opted to hook it up to the TV using a video cable rather than running it through the computer so we were printing in about 3 minutes. The printer accepts the memory stick or a PC flash card and as soon as you insert it the images are on the screen for review, editing, and printing.
First thing is first. Every picture looks incredible! I love showing them to friends and then explaining that they were printed at home. I may not know what "dye sublimation" actually is but it produces great results.
Another great feature is the layout option. For instance you can print 1 4x6 or 4 2x3s etc. If you are printing multiple pictures on one sheet you can either print the same picture or select different ones. You can also create a calendar (great for the grandparents)
Also there is the capability to edit the pictures with effects, colors, etc. Although simple, they have unleashed our creative side. This feature may not excite the user who prefers complex computer editing software but for those who do not have the time or patience for these programs, the built in effects are great. Anyway you can still edit photos on the computer, then save and print them via the memory cards.
The down side of this printer is the cost of the film and actually finding it in the store. Most stores only carry 4-10 boxes if any at all. They also have a propensity to display them in odd locals. For instance at one store, I happen to be walking by a display of vacuum bags and low and behold there was Sony printer paper hanging next to a bunch of "type Z" bags. That being said we now have a nice supply in-between the diaper boxes and formula canisters.
In regards to the size limit, all I ask you is...how many photo albums have you seen which are done in 8x10!
