Useless printer driver cripples an otherwise excellent product

Pros: Very good prints if you reduce the red content of your photographs dramatically

Cons: Poor printer driver that offers practically no adjustment and doesn't work in Windows XP

The Bottom Line: Buy it for black and white photography or if you don't mind doing constant colour corrections before printing. Avoid it if you are using Windows XP.

I mostly agree with the opinions expressed by the other owners as far as print quality is concerned, but this printer has one very serious and inexcusable flaw: it's printer driver.

The printer driver has very few options and a number of settings are actually non-functional. I experimented with various settings and when I couldn't find any difference between my test prints I read the ReadMe file, only to discover that these apparently fully adjustable settings were actually non-functioning.

The printer has a tendency to overemphasize reds very strongly. In order to get acceptable prints one has to make batch conversions in which one drastically reduce the red content of one's pictures. Sony cameras before the 828 tended to produce oversaturated colours which made the problem even worse.

I used the printer for the past two years as described above and also started doing black and white photography to avoid the colour correction problem. I recently upgraded my PC to Windows XP and discovered that the driver refused point blank to install. I use a dual boot system and will have to do all my photo printing from Windows 98.

I expect to migrate completely to Windows XP in future, which will mean that I will not be able to use the printer at all.

I am currently examining Canon's dye-sublimation printers. They are a lot cheaper than my $700 SV55 Sony printer and offer - among others - the option of 4x6" and 4x8" prints.
