banderso's Full Review: Sony Digital Photo SV55 Thermal Printer
I bought this printer from Best Buy for only $199 because they will no longer be handling them. I really wanted a DPP-SV77, but could not resist the price. I rushed home with my new toy and hooked it up to my TV (acts as a monitor).
I printed a few pictures I snapped with my Sony DSC-F707 camera. WOW !! Very nice pictues with NO manipulation from a graphics program. This little printer is a dye sublimation printer. It is continous tone, unlike the ink jets which have to dither to get tonal gradients. There are no dots here, only smooth color transitions. The printer can print 16.7 million colors. The prints are also coated with a plastic laminate to protect them. They look and feel like normal photos.
I have been looking at these printers because my wife says she didn't like digital photography because lots of the pictures I take, never get printed. I see this as an advantage, printing only the best, but she says we have no snap shots of lots of things we've done. Printing 4x6 snapshots with my ink jet was no fun so lots of pictures stayed in the P/C. This printer has changed that.
Now, I can insert my Memory Stick in the slot in the front of the printer and print all the pictures off the stick without firing up my P/C. Results are comparable to drug store pictures. If I want better, I can fire up my P/C and graphics program, properly down size my pictures, color balance them and print out 4x6's of very high quality.
Supplies are reasonable. I've found 25 print packs of paper and dye carts on the internet for about $11. Not too bad ... that figures out to less than $.50/picture.
In all, high marks for this little printer. It's found a place in my digital darkroom ... and for the price it is truly a bargan. It is small and light enough that I can take it along on a vacation and print the photos in the hotel room at night for a bit of "instant gratification".
