| taz2143's Full Review: RCA Lyra RD1021 (64 MB) MP3 Player |
I bought the RCA Lyra RD1021 MP3 player as an upgrade to the RCA Kazoo which I had previously owned.
First Impression
When I first looked at the RD1021, I noticed that it was a little bit more compact than the RCA Kazoo, which is a good thing, because I like to put it in my pocket and listen to music while I am out and about. The other thing that I liked about it was the fact that it has 64MB of internal memory.
The following Accessories/items came with this product:
RCA Lyra MP3 Player RD1021
Clipz Headphones (Clips around the ears)
User Manual
USB Driver/Musicmatch Installation Manual
USB Driver/Musicmatch Software Installation CD
Armband With Neoprene Carrying Case
Warranty Registration Card
Features
The RD1021 has a lot of features. It comes preset with 5 different Equalizer Settings to suit your listening needs. It also has random play and shuffle features, so you don't have to listen to the songs in order. In addition, you can program tracks in the order you want to.
The RD1021 Supports ID Tagging, so you will know which song you are currently listening to at the glimpse of the screen.
This player only takes 1 AAA battery, which amazed me because the previous one which I had took 2 AAA and it didn't last that long. This aids in battery life.
Usage
After I got this player home, I proceeded to first install the drivers for the RD1021. All I had to do was to pop in the CD and follow the on-screen instructions. Since I already had an upgraded copy of Musicmatch (I believe the one that came on the Installation CD was Version 7.5 and I have 8.0, which is available at www.musicmatch.com) I did not install the musicmatch software. The install process was smooth and hassle free.
After installing the drivers, I hooked up the USB cable and ran the musicmatch software to transfer MP3s to the player. I found that the RD1021 holds about 13 songs, which is more than adequate for me. If you want to load up more music, you can buy an optional "smart media" card which will expand on the 64MB of internal memory.
This MP3 player is easy to use, you turn it on by hitting play and access DSP (Equalizer) and the various mode settings by the 2 buttons on top. The volume control is located on the right side of the unit. To turn off the unit, you simply press stop.
Overall, A very easy unit to use.
Sound Quality
The sound quality from this unit is good. The different DSP settings really make listening to music a pleasure. The only thing that I notice is when in Bass mode, the bass gets distorted a little bit, but not too bad.
Final Comments
Overall, I find the RD1021 to be a capable player for the price. It has the features that other MP3 Players may not have in this price range.
The only 2 gripes I have about this unit, are the supplied headphones (or earphones depending on your Point Of View, they clip around the ears) are hard to put on and the fact that you have to use musicmatch (which is not my Player of choice) to download music to the unit.
All things considered, I would highly recommend this unit to those that are looking for a great MP3 Player.
