| matsepinion's Full Review: RCA Lyra RD1021 (64 MB) MP3 Player |
This player is great for working out/jogging due to the arm band that comes with it. Great for wearing while doing chores around the house or when you don't want to bother others with your music. Despite what some reviews say you don't have to use the music match software to transfer music to it. The instructions that come with player make it sound as if you have to use music match so I can see how a lot of people would infer that. Fact is you can use this unit just like a floppy. Install the basic software and format the device. Then just cut and paste music or files to it as you wish just like it were a floppy disk that's it. If you just want to use it as a usb flash drive then you don't even need to install the software on Windows XP just plug it in and copy. I've used the heck out of this thing for transferring documents and listening to music and haven't had any real issues. Once when I hadn't formatted the disk in forever I had a song that wouldn't play no matter how many times I re-copied it. I formatted the disk and re-copied and haven't had a problem since. So I would recommend you format the disk once in a while but not every time you empty its contents. The headphones are kinda big but have much better sound than two other pair of ear buds I've bought for a more discrete look. The built in eq and playback functions are very nice. The key lock function is great so you can't hit a button on accident while it's in your pocket. I've purchased a 256mb sd card and have no problems with disk space now but the built in 64mb isn't really enough for most users. I was really bummed that the unit has no illumination for when it's dark out. I figure this is because it would just kill the battery life. If it came with a charger and used rechargeable batteries maybe they could've put some lights on the thing. Another big plus is it supports WMA files. At a low kbps encoding WMA files just sound better than MP3 files in my opinion so this will allow you to rip you tracks around 80-96kbps as opposed to 128 or higher and fit more music on the Lyra. All in all its a great player for the money. 4.5 stars.
