| ag4hq's Full Review: Radio Shack Pro-95 Handheld Scanner |
I have been an avid scanner listener since about 1988. My first scanner was a Uniden BC200XLT, which is a classic unit if you know scanners. The Pro 95 offers three things that I was looking for: 1000 channels, alpha tagging, and computer control.
With all those channels to program, you do not want to sit there and hit all those buttons, do you? Not me. I bought the serial cable and use the free software off the internet to program and re-program mine. This makes it a snap to change the channels, the order of the channels or whatever else you want to change. Basically you are just maintaining a database and transferring it to the radio whenever you update. Radio Shack has since come out with a USB version of this same cable that makes the software usable on a newer computer. I have this cable and although I found the price a little high ($30), it is a must have to go with this scanner.
The second feature I really like about this unit is the alpha tagging of the channels. This makes it easy to see who is talking. I use this on all my channels.
Some final words....the batteries seem to last forever in this unit. The only drawbacks I have are that the programming cable is not included, and the unit does not come with an AC adapter. This helps keep your cost down, but I would rather pay an another $10 and have the ability to plug it in. But like I said, the batteries last forever.
Overall, one of the best all time scanners. The software is free. Lots of channels. Alpha tagging of the channels. A great little handheld scanner.
