Recently, I went looking for a receiver that could decode both DD and DTS. However, my budget was limited to about $300. Well after some careful research, I tried out the Technics 940. I only paid $249 for it and it is well worth the price. I hooked it up to my Panasonic DVD player and pumped in Gladiator, then Matrix, and finally Jurassic Park. I had originally tried the JVC 6000 receiver and this one blows it away. The transitions from left to right and front to back were seamless. With my active subwoofer added the explosions were clear and lifelike. It also has several optical inputs for other digital devices. I also tried my new stereo with a few music CDs. This is where the system stands above the others. When you play CDs through regular stereo the sound is even better. The bass was deep and the treble was crystal clear.
I've heard some complaints about the remote. It is a little weaker than some others I've seen (Sony models), but since I have a Panasonic/Technics DVD player, it works fine. Plus it can be programmed to controlled your other products. One other concern that I've heard about is that it heats up quickly. Well, I watched both Blade and Gladiator and although the receiver was a little warm it wasn't as hot as some have made it out to be. The only other drawback is that it lacks all of the fancy DSP modes that some other receivers have. However, the modes that it does have are functional, and who uses 25 DSP modes anyway???
All in all, this system is one heck of a bargain and a great buy for anyone who loves music and movies.
