| d_wesley's Full Review: Yamaha DSP-A1 5.1 Channels Receiver |
Being your typical guy I love high tech toys. I bought my DSP-A1 over a year ago for around $2200. Granted the price tag on this is a little high compared to say some of Sony's ES receivers, but I have no doubts about my money being well spent.
The options available on this receiver seem to be endless. So I'll try to mention just some of the main options and functions I tend to use.
HOME THEATER
I have found the quality of the sound to be incredible. Watching DVD's with 7 speakers hooked up in dolby digital really gives you a theater experience. You have the choices of: Pro-logic 3&5 channel, Dolby digital, or any one of the many sound fields.
SOUND FIELDS
The sound fields are great. Depending on what music you prefer and how you want it to sound you're sure to find at least one you like. And if the it isn't exactly how you like it, all the sound fields are customizable.
A/V HOOKUPS
The amount of equipment you can run through the DSP-A1 almost seems endless. Between myself and my roomates we have all of the following hooked up: TV, VCR, DVD, CD, Playstation, Nintendo 64, and our pride and joy... 8 Track Player/Recorder. And there is still room left for some more. You can have up 11 pieces of A/V equipment hooked up.
REMOTE
The DSP-A1 is huge, but hey it can control a lot. It is a learning remote with 3 modes (A,B,C) and comes standard with being able to control Yamaha CD and VCR on A. With B and C you can have it learn functions of other remotes. I have mine programmed for my CD, DVD, VCR, TV, and Satellite Box. It's nice to able to control everything with just the one remote. You also have full control over the receiver with the exception of Bass/Treble and the extra bass button.
TECHNICAL SPECS
Off hand I can't recall the exact technical specs. I recomend going to the Yamaha site to get the exact numbers. But I beleive it deliver 110w to 5 channels and 35w to the 2 front effects speakers.
OVERALL
I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase. It has meat all of my expectations and then even a little more. The sound quality is crisp and clear, even at ear drum shattering levels. The amount of equipment you can hook up is unmatched (at least when I bought mine). The remote, although big, is easy to use once you've learned it and can eliminate having to use 7 different remotes. The options available seem neverending : you can adjust it to the size of your room, size of your speakers, and number of speakers you have; adjust each sound field individually; 3 Dolby fields for movies plus various 70mm formats as well. Short of having every component seperate (amp, pre amp, tuner, decoder, etc..) it'll be hard to get better sound quality and options.
