Pros: Amazingly Clear and Punchy Movie Sound, Lots of Features, Easy Setup, Size and overall Value
Cons: Music Sound Quality is a bit unnatural - clear but not warm, remote is terrible
The Bottom Line: If you play primarily movies, this unit is a tremendous receiver and value. If you play mostly music, I think you might be disappointed with digital amp sound.

| jhf1156's Full Review: harman/kardon DPR 1001 7.1 Channels Receiver |
The DPR-1001 is overall an excellent A/V receiver. While I ended up choosing another unit for my needs, I think the DPR-1001 is amazing value for the dollar.
I tried a lot of receivers (Yamaha, HK, NAD, Denon, Sony) in the under $700us price range and this one came out in the top two but I ended up with a NAD 753 instead. The primary reason for not choosing the DPR-1001 was music sound production. It was a tradeoff however, because the HK is superior to the NAD for Movie Sound.
On the plus side, the 1001 has good build quality, tons of features (6.1, 7 channel Custom Surround Modes) and lots of inputs, and most importantly the most spectacular movie sound I have heard. The sound detail on sound tracks is amazing. I heard effects on this receiver that escaped me on other units I tried. The digital amp provides clear and accurate detail. The final plus is obviously size as the HK is only 4" high.
There are a few negatives. On the downside, the remote is not user friendly - Big, awkward, and hard to use. It also would not likely stand up to real world experiences like kids.
The most notable negative (for me) is the music sound. Sound is clear and accurate but almost too much so. It sounds a bit unnatural. With classical it is great (really great) but for Jazz, Rock and Pop it is almost harsh. Compared with NAD or Yamaha, I was not comfortable with the music capabilities of this unit. This may be a personal preference and I suggest you test drive yourself as this may not be an issue for many buyers.
On a final note on sound, Power output is rated at 50watts per channel and this is somewhat conservative. However, while other HK receivers have a lot of headroom between their continuous output and the dynamic output, the 1001 is much more consistent. In other words, The 50 watts sounds like 60 watts but not 90. This lack of dynamic range is attributed mostly to the digital amp concept.
The final word on this would be....If you are playing mostly movies in a room less than 400 sq ft, I don't think you will find a better unit for the money. If you play mostly music, I think you will be slightly disappointed in the sound and power output.
