Pros: Quality and price! Very inconspicuous!
Cons: Cannot reproduce the deepest bass. One of the grills pops out slightly every so often.
The somewhat small Advent MARBLE speaker system is a compactly boxed TWO-WAY two speaker system that features a 4" woofer and a dome tweeter in each molded enclosure that clocks in at 9"H x 5"W x4"D. The alignment of the woofer and tweeter is a bit different as the tweeter is positioned below the woofer when mounted vertically. The speakers are sold in pairs...not mirror imaged. As they are perfect for outdoor or patio mounting, mounting brackets are indeed supplied with the units. The speakers and brackets are finished in black. The Advent MARBLE speakers are rated to handle 125 watts of power from a receiver or amplifier and we purchased our pair four years ago at Costco for $49.95/Pr.
First of all, setting the Advents up on their supplied metal mounting brackets is a breeze! The supplied directions are more than adequate. The multi-slotted design of the brackets themselves greatly aids in proper placement. A powered drill and two of the supplied black wood screws secured the brackets to our humble rear deck.
I fastened the small speakers to the brackets via the oversized supplied mounting screws that go into the TOP and BOTTOM of each enclosure. Just be careful not to force the screws if you don't feel them going in correctly. Use a bit of ease at first to get the proper feel. The oversized TOP and BOTTOM finished wing nuts/screws allow for flexibility when angling the high performance speakers!
The MARBLEs can be placed horizontally or vertically depending on your given situation and preference. I use mine in the horizontal position angled slightly downward under a roof with the tweeters facing inward.
Incidentally ... while wiring up the Advents to your amp or receiver you will notice two sets of RED positive terminals marked MAIN and SURROUND. This sets the MARBLEs apart from other multi-purpose speakers as there is a slight change in sound character from one terminal to another. Apparantly Advent feels the need to adjust and tailor the OUTPUT of this wonderful system depending on your preference for either MAIN or REAR use. In other words there is a subtle difference between the two terminals but be aware of them when hooking up and don't let them throw you when you see them!
The rear terminals are of the SPRING LOADED type and should prove easy to deal with when using good 16 or 18 Ga. OFC wire.
The sound itself is very nicely balanced with plenty of punch coming from the relatively small enclosures. CLASSICAL, POP, ROCK, FOLK, OLDIES, R&B and COUNTRY music all sound great with little hype! IMAGING is quite nice with excellent spread!
Bass is excellent for such a small system but do not expect anything below 80Hz to be reproduced without the aid of a subwoofer. The highs are brilliant but not overly done with excellent mids. Still the balance is quite nice between lows and highs as people constantly remark so during our backyard barbies. My OLDIES sound great on the little guys! My daughter's J-Lo CD's also sound teriff. One simply gets the impression of rich sound!
The MARBLE speakers are very nicely designed and would also perform quite well in a HOME THEATER system. They can handle plenty of brunt from an amplifier or receiver so long as you avoid amplifier clipping. The drivers themselves are very rugged and have not shown any deterioration over the four years plus time we've owned them. They seem indestructible and aside from one corner of one of the grills popping out every so often I have no major complaints.
These would be good speakers at any price but at $49.95/Pr they are a bargain! The speakers may be hard to find. It has come to my attention that the price has since dropped some more and that would make the gems a truly outstanding "Best Buy" by any standards!
