The Resident Evil series has come a long way since their first debut back in 199? on the PS1. The series has had ups and downs. Mostly ups but recently in a couple of years, the series has been down and actually been questioned about whether the series will eve live again. Lucky us, Resident Evil 4 turns the tables as it redeems the entire series' ups and downs.
Note: The Zombies are actually humans who are brainwashed.
Resident Evil 4 Info:
Genre: Action
Rated M for Intense Violence, Blood and Gore
# of players: 1
Difficulty: Medium
Story: Leon,
This is Captain from S.T.A.R.S. I have a new mission for you. The daughter of the President has been captured and we have traced her to being in some abandoned parts of Europe. We have chosen you for this mission because we know that you are capable of completing this mission. It'll take your strength, running, your quick and fast reflexes and most importantly, your gun ability. Please be safe...and save the President's daughter.
Game-Play:
Shoot; find keys; open doors; solve puzzles; shoot again.
That is the whole ingredient of the entire series. If you fans got tired of it, then your prayers have been answered. For others who liked it that way, you'll definitely love this:
CAPCOM has put in game-play you wouldn't imagine it to be in a Resident Evil game...in fact, you'd see this kind of game-play in an action movie or an action game. The game-play actually spices up the game a bit and makes it even more enjoyable.
Shooting is definitely involved here. Your main objective is to survive with Ashley(daughter of President) beside you. Shooting is necessary, important, essential...you get the idea right? Shooting in RE 4 is actually rewarding as if you shoot a zombie in the head, the zombie will have it's head blown off with blood exploding out of it. Also shooting other body parts is just as rewarding as the zombies react surprisingly well when they get shot. When you shoot a zombie in the leg, the zombie falls down on its knees. Another example is when you shoot the zombie's arm, the zombie holds his arm. A major improvement and new to the series.
Some other major improvements are when zombies grab you, you can shake them off by shaking the left stick and then kick them in the head. Also, when a zombie is bent over or checking their wound, you can kick them and you'll be promised to see that motherf*cker flying through the air. Only to perform these moves is when the A button or the left stick pops up.
Also the zombie's A.I and the basic survival skills of Leon has been improved as the zombies aren't dumb anymore. Nope, they are actually smart that reacts just like a human. No more moaning and groaning. They actually can do things us humans do: open doors, climb stairs and ladders and use weapons! They even throw things at you and block your attacks! Also, they'll use their weapons which includes chainsaws, knives, torches, axes, pitchforks, bombs and whatever else they can find. The zombies even speak Spanish and cry out to other zombies to follow them or even cry out to help them to kill you. They also cry out when they spot you which you don't want to happen ever!
Leon's survival skills have been hugely improved as he can put 'blockades' in front of windows and doors and even knock down ladders when zombies are climbing them up where Leon is on the top floor. If Leon gets a bit surrounded by all the zombies on the top floor, Leon can jump out the windows but trust me, the zombies will come right after you!
The targeting system has been hugely improved as you can aim at anything and you can promise yourself that your aim is dead on as you can actually control the aiming. There is always a laser on all the weapons so you have precise aiming. Also, the camera also helps greatly as it's third-person AND when you get ready to aim, the camera zooms right beside Leon's shoulder which makes the targeting very much easier.
Running is also one of Leon's moves as he can run or walk to get around. Also, running is also a second option when you are surrounded by zombies instead of just shooting them and pray for the best.
The inventory system has been improved a bit as you can no carry more items and organize them. A 'stranger' offers you weapons, herbs, ammo and upgrades to your weapons. But you must pay for them! You can even sell your stuff to him to give you cash to buy things from him. Damn, ain't we getting screwed?!
Besides running around shooting zombies and hoping you find Ashley, you do encounter a few puzzles along the way but don't worry, they aren't at all. In fact, there are only a handful of puzzles to solve. This game is different from the rest as it BASES itself around action instead of the adventure crap! The puzzles aren't what you think they are. In fact,(thanks to ChromeKiller for this) the puzzles are actually like a survival tactic if you will. For an example, you must protect Ashley in one of the village levels and hordes of zombies are coming from every corner of the village and you must choose a path for you two to escape OR kill such and such zombies to actually make it to that path. Also, this puzzle formula actually makes this game tense as you try desperately to do your best and hope you survive.
You do get to play other characters. You get to play Ashley in some of the levels. Actually, I don't know what she does as so far, I haven't gotten too far in the game to experience that BUT when you are playing Leon and Ashley is your side-kick, she yells out when danger is near and help solve puzzles.
The only drawback is the wide-screen format which the plays in the whole time. It's somewhat like letter box but a bit bigger. All I got to say is that it's kind of annoying when you're used to full-screen games.
Graphics:
To be perfectly honest, Resident Evil 4's graphics will stun you, amaze you, make you jump up and about because this is one hell of a game that features stunning visuals. Dark, dusty and gritty early levels that feature the village and beyond where the setting is gritty and seem abandoned environments just oozing with detail. The forests are lush but gritty and dirty as a dark horizon covers the earth with its moody texture. Now onto the characters; the zombies aren't the scariest which they don't need to be...seeing them running after you should scare the hell out of you! Their face movements are on spot as they move just like they would in real life. Their basic movements are on spot and their Spanish is I guess good cause I have no freaking clue what the hell they are saying. Leon and the other human characters' graphics are another graphical issue that is excellent as their hair moves when they move and their body motions are different and varied. The explosions that go about and the just the color variations in the game are simply brilliant that you can't just help to think to yourself; This is a game, right?. The overall graphics are excellent that oozes with creativity and majestic beauty that NO ONE should miss. I'm telling you, Resident Evil 4's graphics are one of a kind!
Sound:
Along with pretty much everything else, the sound is simply great to hear as the voice-actors are excellent as I know they have high emotion on what they're doing. The music is eerie that has eerie and dark music playing when zombies or enemies around and while everything is clear, there is silence...a bit too silent! Although, there are a few times that when everything is clear, there is scary music playing. The sound effects like a gun firing, water running, barrels breaking, door being slammed/kicked and pretty much everything else is excellent. The zombies moaning, screams, cries and Spanish talk are pretty scary when you think about it as it seems too real. I can't tell you how many times I looked behind me while playing this game. Everything sounded so real.
Control:
The series has always had a problem with this issue. In fact, this is one of the main reasons that people just didn't want to play the series anymore. Luckily, Resident Evil 4 has turned the tables on this too as the controls are easy as ever. They are actually quite smooth and assigned really well. You never forget how to perform each move or what move belongs to what button. I never though that CAPCOM can actually pull off the aim so damn well and just walking around can be so damn easy to control. If I can just keep this brief and not go into what move goes to what button; trust me, this is the easiest Resident Evil game you've ever controlled as the controls are smooth and assigned really well.
Lasting Appeal:
You'll experience 20 hours of intense and sometimes hard-core action in the single-player. You can replay each level to get a better score of your kills and such. Also, I believe there are costume unlockables.
Bottom Line:
I'm a huge fan of the series as I've played every single Resident Evil game to be made and that includes Survivor. I actually gave up on the series as the games just weren't fun and exciting as it was. As happy I was and happy that I'm telling the world, Resident Evil 4 is THE game that every fan dreamed of. It purely makes the first Resident Evil weak, bland and pretty damn boring. Resident Evil 4 has so much in it and gives out so much, it's just so obvious that it accomplishes so much more that fans have always wanted. This game is truly the best and greatest out of the series as no doubt this game deserves your attention. Come on! There's nothing to lose. It's all in Resident Evil 4!
