el_timmy's Full Review: Resident Evil 4 for GameCube
Resident Evil 4 is by far one of the best games I've ever played, and I'm not even an old resident evil fan.
Story 7/10
I see nothing really special with this games story line. The typical presidents daughter gets kidnapped and held in Madrid while S.T.A.R.S.(special tactic and rescue squad) member Leon Kennedy is sent to rescue her from a cult of restless parasite infected villagers. I didn't buy this game for the story, the gold doesn't lay here.
Gameplay 10/10
Remember the old resident evil games with the clunky controls and awful camera angles? That was the scary part of those old survival horror games, not being able to have real control of fluid movement and good angles. Say goodbye to that, because it's all gone now.
Resident Evil 4 now has new gameplay mechanics presenting a behind-the-back-camera-perspective and a "hit zone" aiming system. The behind the camera view makes it feel like a movie and makes you feel like your in the game. You get the best point of view of Leon while shooting enemies which makes it easier for accurate aiming. The game amazingly offers spectacular and intimidating bosses. Almost every boss fight feels like a cut-scene that will keep you on the edge of your seat. What's also amazing is that it will matter where you shoot the enemy. If you shoot an enemy in the hand, they will drop their weapon, headshots do more damage and you can also shoot the projectiles thrown at you.
In order solve the puzzles in this game you'll just need common senses. Some of the puzzles may include pushing a box on a panel, find keys to unlock doors and figure out patterns of shapes.
Sound 9/10
Amazing full voice over for everybody including the villagers. The villagers only speak Spanish and it's a good way to study for my spanish exam.
The music from this game creates an ambiance. Some of the music during a bad situation fits the mood creating some tense, fear and a little paranoia. The music during saving kinda calms you down creating an "everythings going to be just find" type of mood.
Graphics 10/10
The visuals are phenomenal and breathtaking. The detail is plentiful ranging from the gorgeous trees, the wrinkles of the villagers cloths and the grotesque worn out detail of the homes seems too real at times. The environment has the best graphics in this game.
The character designs are realistic and dark. The bosses are "freaks of natures" that will leave you petrified if encountered in real-life. El Gigante (one of the bosses) has an ogee like resemblance and a "Hulk-like" attitude.
This game is cut-scene heaven. They are action paced and full of adrenaline. Like I said before, it feels like your watching a horror film at times.
Replay Value 9/10
After beating the game you'll want to play it again to unlock all the guns you didn't get the first time around. After the 2nd or 3rd run you'll may feel like the game is too easy, but that's why their's a challenge mode called Merceneries. In merceneries you'll have a time limit and must rack up enough points to get a high score to unlock new weapons to tinker with in story mode. You'll start off with a limited amount of supplies depending on which character you'll pick. You'll have to manage to look for supplies and time bonuses around the map.
