ratchetanddax's Full Review: Resident Evil: Outbreak for PlayStation 2
THE NIGHTMARE RETURNS
Resident Evil finally comes back to PS2. Resident Evil (RE) Outbreak introduces a new idea of online gaming by having four players play online to survive a city full of zombies. There are five stages to play on and eight characters to choose from. Each character has his or her own special ability, for instance, one can carry more items while another can take more damage or is better with weapons. There is a story mode to the game but it is not as epic as other RE because of the huge selection of characters compared to the pass REs. One wont find themselves getting attached to the characters.
GETTING SCARED WITH OTHERS
While there is one player mode, the online mode is the gem of the game but not a shiny one. The load times are horrible; there is no voice communication on the game except the four commands: "hey", "Go", "help", "thanks". This really waters down a great idea. While the online mode is good, the one player mode is filled with useless rooms and stupid ally AI. While all the rooms on the online mode have items for all players, the offline mode has empty rooms that make it dangerous to explore because of all the zombies that travel the empty halls and rooms. The AI in the offline mode seem to not care about their life. They will use up their ammo on zombies that can easily be avoided and they will let themselves be attacked. One more thing that is annoying is that the AI always says repeated phrases that can get old really fast.
SAME OL SAME OL
The game play is not very different either. It is the same formula that was used in Resident Evil when it was released way back in 1996. The game play is enjoyable, just not revolutionary or an evolution of the old controls. The same problems are still there. Slow moving characters and difficult camera angles. The sound and music are great like always so that still is enjoyable. The graphics are really good as well. This is just another case of too much hype and not enough delivery (did not Capcom learn their lesson from Devil may Cry 2?). Hopefully Resident Evil 4 helps rejuvenate this staling series.
