playgirl27's Full Review: Resident Evil: Outbreak for PlayStation 2
I am a huge resident evil fan and own all but dead aim and survivor. These did'nt appeal to me really as love the puzzle aspect of these games.Firstly we will start with a run down of the previous capcom hits in this series
HISTORY.....
Resident evil first began on playstation 1. Over the years before the playstaion 2 we saw three titles. Resident evil mostly based on a mansion and hidden facility near the mountains of raccoon city. A directers cut followed with advanced gameplay. Resident evil 2 more zombie splatter and based in a police station for a good proportion of the game. New monsters and puzzles along with two discs and four endings made this a massive hit. Then along came Resident evil three Nemisis larger game with widespread gameplay over vast areas of the city. Nemisis chases you through various parts of the game and trying to lose him was indeed a challage, superb.
Then launched the PS2 we saw a new genre of games explode onto the console. Resident evil code veronica a somewhat difficult game that took along time to complete set on an island with the ashford family in the thick of things. And a guest appearance from wesker in the first game who was presumed dead. Then after much awaiting Outbreak hit the shelves.
OUTBREAK....
Characters...
You have eight new characters to choose at the beginning of the game. Depending on which you choose they all carry something different or have a special quality. quick list up and info on those for you all then.
Kevin Ryman....Police officer
He has a 45 automatic weapon he can also kick enemys and take pot shots at them.
Mark Wilkins....Security guard
He starts witha handgun he can also guard against attack and dish out a heavy swing attack
Cindy Lennox...Waitress
She starts with a herb case she can also duck attacks.
George Hamilton...Doctor
Starts with a medical set he can mix lots of different herbs together. He also has a tackle move
David King...Plumber
He starts with a tool box with some useful objects to make and fix weapons. He also has the monkey wrench throw and countinus knife attack. A useful additional player.
Jim Chapman....Subway agent
He starts with a coin if you toss the coin it is surposed to change his destiny. He can also play dead a useful move on the hospital levels. And item search he can see the items on the map he is the only one who can do this.
Yoko Suzuki....University student
Her starting item is knapsack. She is my most used play as she can carry eight instead of four items. She also has an escape move.
Alyssa Ashcroft...Journalist
She starts with lock picks only really works for simple locks. She also can back step and you can take pot shots at your enemy.
When you start pick your main player you control this one. Then choose two team mates to assist you, this is a new added part of the gameplay. And by all means took me ages to get used to. In gameplay you can call to your teammates for help a full listing for this is in the booklet. You have five levels of gameplay only access able one at a time. Each alittle harder than the last with added more difficult enemys.
At the end of each part points are allocated for the purpose of buying costumes, movie ending, music and more. This is quite a large game and with all the new aspects plus some old resi style makes it an enjoyable play. Although if you get frustrated easily put it down often and go back to it.
GRAPHICS....
Super sleek smooth graphics. Videos are outstanding the quality of these just gets better and better. Design is really well done with plenty of new enemys.
SOUND AND MUSIC.....
The usual zombie groans and moans sound effects are great in the dark. It adds plenty of atmosphere, music is in keeping with the game and is as good as past games.
PLAYABILITY.....
A quite hard game I felt even for your hardened resi fans. Controls are quite hard to get used to but once you do a really enjoyable play. Plenty of puzzles to keep your brain ticking and loads of enemys to waste.
OVERALL...
This game is for 16+ because of the violence involved. I would play it again and have since played Outbreak file 2, which has the advantage of net play. And of course Resi 4. I bought this full price the day it came out for £32.99. But you can pick it up at Game for around £14.99 bargin. Also avaliable at most good playstaion stockist. Here are some links below.
