Starcraft is one of the greatest RTS games ever made. I am a big fan of the RTS genre, and until having played this game I had been devoted entirely to Westwood studios and their Command and Conquer. To me there was no greater fun than C&C and C&C:RA. Then when Starcraft came out, I decided to give it a try, after all I had Warcraft II, and thought that that was one of the better games in the genre. I was unprepared for what I got from Starcraft.
First off, the storyline. The Terrans are a group of humans, descendants of Earth, the survivors of a failed mission to establish human life outside of Earth (it's all explained in the manual). The Protoss are and archaic race, who charge themselves with protecting the galaxy from harm. The Zerg are a race with an overmind that controls them all. They are looking to conquer the entire galaxy. The Zerg, in their conquests, have finally made it to the borders of Terran territory, where they begin to destroy the Terran race. Unbenknownst to the Terrans, the Protoss have arrived to help. This is basically where Starcraft begins.
First of all, the three races in the game are completly different, each having their own strengths and weaknesses, unlike in Warcraft II, and each is balanced perfectly. The Zerg are a race of cheap, weak creatures, the Protoss a race of strong yet expensive creatures, and the Terran a race that is well balanced between price and strength. Each one can beat the other depending on the strategies used. There is no one race that will easily defeat the other.
The graphics, sound, and gameplay are all spectacular. Space ships actually look like they are hovering over the land, missiles have smoke trailing after them, the grpahics are a delight to the eye. The sound is the same. The music is perfect, and the unit speech is great. The best aspect of the entire game is the gameplay. The learning curve isn't very steep, but there is enough of a choice of strategies to keep you coming back for more time and again. The AI is great, adapting to your strategies, so that you have to constantly change them in order to win. The game was fast paced and exciting, and there was hardly ever a dull moment.
Another strong aspect of the game is the multiplayer over Battle.net. There are litterally thousands of playerso n at all times, and the connections are very solid. In the whole time, I only got thrown off I think twice, and that was because my ISP disconnected me, not any fault of Battle.net's. The game is smooth, and the ability to play many different kinds of games keeps it fresh and exciting.
In short, if you are looking for the one RTS game to buy, this is it. Just be careful and make sure that you have enought time on your hands to play this extremly addicting game.
BTW: I currently have a PIII 600 mhz computer, but I played this game without a hitch on a P 150 mhz with a 28.8 modem.
