You say you want a revolution...
Written: Jan 04 '02 (Updated Feb 27 '02)
Pros:Classic track...redone!
Cons:none.
The Bottom Line: The Beatles, Stone Temple Pilots, and charity. What better a cause could there be?
Everybody knows about The Beatles. Quite a few people also are well aware of their classic track ”Revolution”.
The events of the past year spurred various artists to contribute their talents to various charitable causes. I am grateful for the fact that this presented the opportunity for my favorite band of all time, Stone Temple Pilots to perform ”Revolution” live on the cable special Come Together: A Night For John Lennon's Words and Music, Dedicated To New York City and Its People. The rock and roll quartet then went on to do something amazing.
On October 6th of 2001, the band entered a New York studio and re-recorded the Lennon-written classic track. Never in a million years would listeners believed that Scott Weiland (vocals), Dean DeLeo (guitar), Robert DeLeo (bass), and Eric Kretz (drums) could do such a wonderful song even more justice. The resulting single for ”Revolution” is very near perfect. The music is of course inspirational and wonderful, but the fact that both STP and Atlantic Records are donating all profits to charity is staggering.
The single contains more than just the one track. It also provides multimedia features documenting the band’s work in the studio. But, of course the main focus is the music. Weiland sounds little like Lennon, with that said he wails and growls through the beautifully self-produced mid-tempo track. There really is little more that needs to be said about the track. We know the words, in this context we know the meaning, and with the combination of alterna-rock and classic rock ala Lennon, ”Revolution” proves to be one of the most surprising and somehow refreshing tracks of the past few months.
Undoubtedly, there are skeptics thinking something to the effect of “why would Stone Temple Pilots remake such a perfect track?” To that, I respond “because they can.”
If you weren’t a STP fan before this song, take a listen. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by Weiland and company. If you were already a STP fan, this is a must-own single. If you don’t know who the hell Stone Temple Pilots is but happen to really like Lennon’s words and The Beatles then you probably should spend the $3.99 to check out this single. However you look at it, this single and it’s cause are both win-win situations.
So come on, sing along…you know you can’t help yourself…
You say you want a revolution
Well you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know you can count me out (in)
Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Alright Alright
