Cons: Each game takes a long time (approximately 30-90 minutes, depending on the amount of players)
The Bottom Line: Based on the classic board game, Risk is definitely a game for people who have lots of spare time or those who get bored in the summer/winter months.
The world is in disorder as armies try to achieve world domination. You are the supreme commander of one of the armies and you aim to annihilate everyone else. To begin your quest for world domination, you pick territories (e.g. Eastern US, East Africa, Middle East, etc.) and assign troops to each territory. Once that is done, you choose where you want to attack. When your troops "battle" you roll some dice. Whichever army has the lower roll loses a troop. This continues on and on. Eventually, Risk cards are found and traded in for more reinforcements. Reinforcements are also given to each player at the end of every round.
The game seems easy enough, and it is, but it takes at least 30 minutes to play and I've played games that have lasted two hours. Sadly, you must wait for each computer to make their attacks and Risk card trades. This can take many minutes. However, you can not walk away from the game while the computer takes its turn because if the computer decides to battle on of your territories, you must be at the computer in order to hit "roll" and defend your territory.
The sound effects are not commendable. If a territory is won, a loud barbaric cheer is heard and if a territory is lost, a barbaric boo is heard. After each roll of the dice, there is a gunshot and, assuming that one has enough troops, a cannon fire. These are about all off the sounds within the game.
What I have just described is called the "classic" mode of the game. In "same time" mode, each player can attack from multiple territories at the same time. For instance, if a player own three territories and wants the territory that borders all three of them, that player can attack form all three territories at the same time. This game gets a little confusing and, considering the computer is doing the exact same thing, gets a little repetitive.
A third type of play is "LAN (local area network) game." This type of game allows a player to battle anyone that is networked to their computer. This type of game functions the same way as described above, except that you are battling a friend instead of a computer.
The game is highly addicting. I have had the game for weeks already and have "conquered the world" only three times. I have lost the world many times also. In order to avoid extreme boredom, i leave my computer on and each game takes about a day. I play, walk away form it, go to lunch, play, etc. As I beat the game, I add another army to the world and start over. However it is much harder to conquer 6 armies than 2 armies.
Therefore, although the game gets a little repetitive, it is addicting and the difficulty level can always be increased.
