| bluelantern69's Full Review: Rockford Fosgate Punch 800a2 Car Amp |
I have been an audiophile for the past 5 years and this is one of the best deals for amplifiers on the market. This RF 800a2 puts out around 1000 watts. To tell you the truth, you can find this amp for great deals if you shop around. I used to work at Best Buy and list on this amplifier was $600. My cost as an employee was $359. That is, the markup on the amp is extremely high. Do some research and shop around. Look on EBAY, you can find this amplifier easily under $400. I actually bought mine from a small car audio shop in Los Angeles, and after bargaining, I got it complete with all the power wires I needed for well under $400. It honestly depends on how willing you are to haggle and get a good price.
Now, about the amplifier. I found a couple of things about it:
1. This amplifier sucks some mad juice! Make sure to route it with at least 8 gauge power and ground cables. I find it better to take some time and look inside your engine compartment. Forget about capacitors, what you are looking for are the ground cables. Most stock cars come with dinky 10-12 gauge grounds into the chassis. I replaced one of the grounds with some fat 4 gauge cable and I never get dimming of the lights in my car, even when the bass peaks!
2. Don't bother to screw in the control panels on the amp. If you have the amp mounted horizontally, they will easily stay on the amp and you dont have to bother using the allen wrench every time you want to fine tune the controls.
3. This amp runs pretty hot, so make sure you have good ventilation wherever you are mounting the amp. It is best to use a vertical mounting position to allow for better heat dissipation.
4. And lastly, I love this amp! I power 2 JL Audio W6 subs with the 800a2 set at 400x2@2 ohms and it provides more than adequate power than I need. I don't even turn up the gain all the way, because it is too much power even for my top of the line subs. A fine amp for a great price (if you just look around).
