| vandalz's Full Review: Rockford Fosgate Punch 800a2 Car Amp |
Rockford Fosgate has long been the standard for Amplifiers and Speakers. They have been around for a while now, and are widely use in many sound competitions. They are especially noted for ranking in the Top 10 in the IASCA Competitions, and the USAC Competitions.
I have used a Rockford Fosgate 800a2 before, and I really feel that it was
worth the purchase. I use to use a Kicker DX700 to push 4 12" MTX 5000 Subwoofers. The Kicker amp did okay, but it left me wanting. So I sold the
Kicker amp, and bought the Rockford Fosgate 800a2. It didn't leave me wanting afterwards.
Pros:
The amp pushed all of the speakers so hard that I heard them pop. They
were actually recieving more power than they could handle. The speakers
themselves were rated 250 Watts Peak, and each speaker was rated at a
4-Ohm Impedance.
To make the amplifier work with 4 Subwoofers each rated at 4-Ohms I had to
wire in Series and Parallel configurations. I hooked up 2 of the subwoofers in Parallel, I also hooked up the other 2 in Parallel configuration as well, then I hook that wiring configuration into Series.
The actual specifications for the amp are as follows:
RMS Power (Continuous Power) @ 4-Ohms - 200 Watts X 2
RMS Power (Continuous Power) @ 2-Ohms - 400 Watts X 2
RMS Power (Continuous Power) (Bridged/Mono) - 800 X 1
- Note - Peak power is 1.7 times more than the actual rating of the amp in
RMS
The Total Harmonic Distortion Rate is <0.05%
The Frequency Response of the Amplifier is rated from 20 Hz to 20 KHz
The Signal-to-Noise Ratio is >100 Db
This amp is not small in size, it is measured in at
Length: 18.27"
Width: 9.60"
Height: 2.62"
Cons:
I did have a few things that I did not desire to have with an amplifier. One the amplifier would get really hot if it did not have a fan circulating air over the heatsinks. The heat would cause a definite power loss after a while.
Another problem that I encountered was the amp required a lot of power. I
had to hook a Lightning Audio 1500 amp discharge battery, and 4 Lightning
Audio 1.5 Farad Caps, to supply enough power to get the full impact of the
speakers after continuous play.
The amp did not cut off unless it really got overheated, or if you overloaded the amp by putting a lower rated impedance on the amp.
This amp is definitely worth the buy, especially if you want to push multiple speakers. If you do have some problems pushing multiple speakers, then contact me. I will help you out with the configuration.
