| groharlem's Full Review: Rockford Fosgate Punch 800a2 Car Amp |
I bought this car for my 1986, 56 horespower Chevrolet Nova. I used it to power one RF Power DVC 12 both at 2 and 8 ohms. I got it off ebay for $350 brand new.
Specs
I really can't remember the stats off hand, but i'm pretty sure they are:
2x400 @ 2 ohms
1x800 @ 2 ohms
2x200 @ 4 ohms
1x400 @ 4 ohms
1x200 @ 8 ohms
It is 2 ohm stable, and has some nice dual 8 guage inputs for power and one 8 guage for the ground cable. It also has 8 guage inputs for the speaker inputs, and has built in Hi/Lo pass Xovers, along with some nice endcaps that come with the hex wrench ;)
Sound Quality
NOTE: For my tests, I set the gain correctly, so the distortion I experienced WASN'T because of my ignorance........
This amp really isn't as bad as some other "expert" car audiophiles say. It sounds REALLY great at 8 ohms!! But that is only at 200 watts, so it can't really get too loud. If you plug it into 2 ohms though, it's a different story. It sounds loud, but isn't very clear, and can distort if you turn it up. You don't really need to turn it up that much either..:( But for normal listening, 2 vs. 8 ohms isn't really all that different, unless you turn it up. As for the Hz reading, I noticed that this thing hits very low, all you need for your subs. As for mids, I had no complaints, I really never noticed, but I'm pretty sure it had some terrific mids as well.
Sound Pressure Levels
At 8 ohms, it can't really get too loud, but it satisfied me for the 2 months that I had it at this ohm level for. It can get VERY VERY loud at 2 ohms, and I'd suggest not listening it too long when it is this loud, I think it may have damaged my ears and I'm only 18 >:!, but thats my own fault. Only problem is that this amp really doesn't do too well above about 120 dB's, it distorts, quite considerably, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't the sub I was using (a RF Power DVD 12 rated at 1000 watts RMS/2000 Peak).
Recommendations
I'd definitely recommend this amp to anyone needing a decent low-mid ranged amp for their subwoofers. It has some decent sound quality at 8 ohms, and pretty good at 2 ohms, as long as you don't turn it up. (i don't know about 4 ohms, since i only used DVC subs). If you are going to buy this amp, BEWARE of retail stores. When on sale, Best Buy charges like $567. On ebay, or other online sites, they can be as cheap as $330. I have since sold this amp since it damaged my alternator on my Nova, and I need money to get a new car.
