hwz1's Full Review: Rocky Mountain RMR-D250 Radar Detector
Are you one the many who have wasted hundreds of dollars on radar detectors that do not detect every for of radar and/or laser? Perhaps, you spent a lot of money on a radar detector that detects too much and you end up slowing down everytime someone turns on their microwave or curler. At last, there is an option that clears up both problems.
I had never heard of Rocky Mountain radar until recently. A friend recommended them and I decided that I would give them a try. As a teen and in my early 20's I used the various brands we all came to know and found that they just did not work too well. For the past decade I have chanced my luck. However, last week I saw three cops hidden well along a rode that I travel three times a week and spend an hour on each time. I cannot afford to go 65 and, quite frankly, feel uncomfortable doing so.
Hence, the $175.00 purchase of the RMR-D250. The D250 looks and feels just like the radar detectors that I remember from a decade ago. It is about the size of my wallet and attaches to your windshield with two little suction cups. It makes a beeping noise when trouble is near and has lights that alert you to how serious the trouble is. It plugs into the cigarette lighter just like the old detectors. Alas, that is where the similarities end.
To begin with, the D250 has a voice option. Yep, it will tell you to slow down as there is potential trouble ahead. No longer do you have to concern yourself with looking away from the road if you choose to listen to the voice. The device also has the full range of settings that you can control (Mute, volume, and dim, etc.) and set to your preferences.
The second difference is the amount of false alarms. I got out my old detector and used it one morning and found that I was constantly getting "beeped" as I drove the PA Turnpike around Philadelphia. The detector was basically worthless as I would never even get my speed back to 75+ before I would get beeped. With the D250 I rarely found the "renegade" beep. The detector just does not pick up the various interferences that cause the false alarms. The company claims that it eliminates 99.9% of the false alarms because it scans three faster than other radar detectors and can, therefore, double check frequencies. I have no idea about this technical stuff and do not think it eliminates 99.9% of the false alarms, but I would guess that perhaps 80%. Either way, it is much quieter than any radar detector that I have ever used.
Thirdly, the D250 can scan for all types of radar (X,K,Ka, SuperWide, Pulse, Instant-On, POP, Photo) and laser (Pro-Laser, LTI, Laser-Lite). This is abig plus and a big upgrade from years past. Virtually all of the early radar detectors scanned for multiple types of radar, but laser scans left you to hang out to dry. As far as I can tell, the D250 does an equally good job with radar and laser detection. I am now confident that I can go around a bend or past a grouping of bushes and not see the cops sitting there waiting to nail me.
Finally, and most importantly, the D250 works. I am back to cruising the PA Turnpike with the confidence that I can avoid the cops speed guns and get to where I need to be going in a decent amount of time. I have experienced at least six or seven times when the D250 alerted me to trouble about a mile away. This is ideal as it provides plenty of time to slow down and not be seen. I will mention that it seems to work better on highways than in the city, though this is to be expected. The bottom line is that you will dramatically reduce the likelyhood of getting a ticket with the D250.
The D250 is as easy to use as can possibly be. You have the cord that plugs into your cigarette lighter and the detector itself. You also have the lights on the front which light up to show you how close you are to the trouble (The beeps gets quicker the nearer you get, as well.) and the small speaker. Finally, you have three one touch buttons for the dim, mute, and city options. The volume is controlled by a wheel. You simply plug the D250 in and off you go.
I highly recommend the Rocky Mountain Radar D250. I have been saved by the D250 more than a few times over the past month and do not have the constant false alarms slowing me down and making me wonder what lies ahead. A great purchase.
