teenage's Full Review: Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII for PlayStation...
My Side Notes
I have attended a public school all my life, and I have never heard anything about Chinese/Asian's history. I must admit that the American's public schools do a very bad job at teaching Asians history. If you really look at it, Americans public schools do a very bad job at teaching their own history! This is where KOEI kicks in and educated young American and many other races about the unique history of Asia. Ever since the early days of KOEI in NES, I have learned about Genghis Khan, Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, Tokugawa, Lu Bu, Zhuge Liang, Cao Cao, Sun Jian, and Sun Quian without ever stepping into a public school classroom.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII is the newest addition to the KOEI's family of educational games. RotTK VIII [Romance of the Three Kingdoms] taught me about the warrior Lu Bu, Lord Cao Caos strive for power, and the brotherhood of Liu Bei, Zhiang Fei, and Guan Yu.
Game Play
I would say that Romance of the Three Kingdoms is not for everyone. It system of management is very difficult to understand and master.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII is played on something I call "Menu-Command" What is Menu-Command? Well, that is a very easy question for me to answer. You control EVERYTHING with a menu. This is not a very exciting game mode to play in. You have to put in serious thought about each moves you are going to make!
The battle mode to me is very exciting. In the eyes of others, it is the most boring'est in the world. During battle you see a view of the whole map. You move units to designated area of each area.
There is only one thing I wish for the game to have. An animated walkthrough tutorial for the game. I think with the walkthrough, people like me could learn how to play this game a whole lot faster!
Sounds
I find the sound of the game to be quite good! As many other would agree with me, traditional Chinese music can be very distracting to people who don't have "Chinese Ears." The battle music gives you the extra energy of war, and the soft mourning music gives you a great feeling of defeat. I believe KOEI did a phenomenal job putting all of these theme songs together.
Graphics
KOEI is never in top notch in RotTK's graphics. The graphics does not affect the game play. However, Romance of the Three Kingdom VIII has one of the best graphics in the Romance of the Three Kingdom series. I personally do not care about the graphics because the graphic is not needed to determine the outcome of the game.
Cool game Feature that I like!
Romance of the Three Kingdom VIII has 600 + officers! They also give you 100 more spaces to create you own officers. Each officer in the game has a unique talent and ability. The create an officer option is very useful for me because I can create officers with names that I can actually read!
The technology management part of the game is awesome. For one example, you start out with a standard infantry. The more fame and power you obtain, the better things get. Troops from all sides will ask to join your service, your soldier will advance in training, and your researchers will develop many new technologies to satisfy your thirst for power.
There are tons of ruler to choose. What does this mean? Can you guess? That right! The outcome of the game will be different every time! Yes, this is mean you can play more than 100, 200, or 300 times! The game will never get old!
Conclusion:
Romance of the Three Kingdom VIII is not for everyone. It is for a strategy player like me. The game takes a lot of time to play and planning. This is not recommended for little kids because they will have no clue of what to do. It is also not recommended for an action game player. I highly recommend parents to buy these game for their teens. It will give them a vast education in Chinese's history.
